Morrigan is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
The Morrígan is a goddess and member of the Tuatha Dé Danann in Irish culture. Her name means "Great Queen" or "Phantom Queen" in old Irish, and she is also known as "Anand". She is a goddess of war, death and fate, inspiring warriors in battle and foretelling incoming death. She is part of a trio of the "three Morrígna" consisting of herself and her sisters Badb and Macha, who were sometimes separate goddesses and at other times aspects of the same goddess, with the Morrígan being the primary goddess of this trinity. She is the wife of the Dagda, described as "envious"[1], and is a shapeshifter that takes primarily takes the form of a woman or crow.
She plays an important role in the myth of Cu Chulainn. They first meet when the Morrígan scares one of his cattle away from his domain, making him insult her and attempt to attack her. However before he can harm her she transforms into a crow and Cu Chulainn recognises who she is, expressing regret for their foul interaction. When he claims that she cannot harm him, she foretells his death. During his efforts to defend Ulster from Queen Medb, Morrígan appears before Cu Chulainn in the form of a beautiful young woman attempts to seduce and make love to him, only for Cu Chulainn to reject her unaware of her true identity. Enraged, the Morrígan reveals her true nature and opposes him in the following battles, appearing first as an eel to trip him, then a wolf driving cattle into a stampede, and finally a red cow to trample him underfoot, only for Cu Chulainn to successfully wound and drive her off each time. They next meet when the Morrígan disguises herself as an old woman milking a cow that offers Cu Chulainn three glasses of milk. Once again he fails to recognise her and drinks them, with each glass healing the wounds she received in the respective battles between the two until she is fully healed. She reveals herself to him once again and he expresses regret that he healed her, claiming he would have never done so if he recognised her. They meet one final time before he heads to his final battle with Queen Medb, he sees an old woman washing blood stained armour, an omen of his impending death. When he is finally dying, Cu Chulainn ties himself to a standing stone with his own entrails so he can die standing. None of his enemies dare approach him until a crow, possibly the Morrígan herself, lands on his shoulder and they believe he is truly dead.
Design
Morrigan was designed by Kazuma Kaneko for Shin Megami Tensei II. She is a green skinned woman with blond and wings with grey feathers wearing black armour consisting of a chest plate, gauntlets, and boots and greaves, along with a black helmet resembling the head of a crow and a sword with a white scabbard slung around her left shoulder.
