Vairocana (Sanskrit: वैरोचन, romanized Vairocana; Japanese: 大日如来Great Sun Tathagata, romanized Dainichi Nyorai) is a cosmic Buddha in Mahayana Buddhism.
The Megami Tensei franchise identifies Vairocana as the same as Asura Lord, possibly due to Virocana (Sanskrit: विरोचन, romanized Virocana, also spelled "Virochana"), an asura king in Hinduism.
A demon exclusive to the Super CD-ROM² version of Shin Megami Tensei. Can only be obtained by having the old man in Sugamo Prison fuse Missionary, Amaterasu, and Crusader together, and is available regardless of the player's level.
Vairocana, also known as Dainichi-Nyorai, presides over the Chesed Temple, taking in lost souls and offering them salvation, regardless of their sins or deeds. He is also the master of the 12 Divine Generals, though he lends them to Atavaka to help him guard Fort Gevurah.[1] If Aleph goes to Vairocana and is Chaos-aligned, he simply tells him never to attempt justifying the evils he has done and sends him on his way. If Aleph is Neutral or Law-aligned, however, Vairocana will call him a servant of YHVH and attack, only to be killed in turn.
In Shin Megami Tensei (Super CD-ROM²), despite referring to himself as the Tenma race when fused, the status screen lists his race as Tyrant.
Nomenclature
The specific Japanese spelling ヴィローシャナVirōshana appears to in part be influenced by the Sino-Japanese rendering 毘盧遮那Birushana and the Japanese name of the asura lord Virocana, ヴィローチャナVirōchana.
Dainichi Nyorai is the Sino-Japanese reading of Vairocana's Middle Chinese epithet 大日如來dajH nyit nyo loj, a calque of Sanskrit: महावैरोचन, romanized mahāvairocana (Great Vairocana; literally 'great solar one') and Sanskrit: तथागत, romanized tathāgata (tathagata, a term of address to a buddha; literally 'thus come/gone').
