Qitian Dasheng, also known as Wu Kong and Seiten Taisei, is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Origin

Qítiān Dàshèng (齊天大聖), meaning "Great Sage, Heaven's Equal", is a title claimed by Sun Wukong, one of the main characters of the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, itself being a fantasised story of Xuanzang's Great Tang Records on the Western Regions.

In Journey to the West, Sun Wukong is born of a rock imbued with the power of the Five Elements; earth, fire, wood, water, and metal. As he grows, he learns of the 道 dao from Puti Zushi, masters various combat arts, and learns of the Way of Immortality. Zushi tells Wukong to never needlessly show off his skills, as spreading them to the wrong people could cause trouble. Nevertheless, Wukong's power begins to rival that of the eastern 仙 xiān, the Daoist Immortals. As he becomes violent and egotistical, he barges into the realm of Ao Guang, the Dragon King of the East Sea, and, his strength clear, gets his stave, which would become his signature weapon. Eventually, as he garners friends, his ego grows to massive levels. The underworld attempts to punish Wukong for extorting Ao Guang, but fails as he writes his name out of those punished. Furthermore, heaven fails to write him out of existence. Because Wukong was completely unmanageable, the Jade Emperor tries to appease Wukong by giving him a title in heaven, though it was only the lowest. However, upon realising he was duped, he shirks his duty and leaves, declaring himself "Qitian Dasheng," or "Great Sage, Heaven's Equal." While the immortals tolerate him, they leave him out of a banquet, wherein Wukong decides to rebel by stealing Laozi's pills of immortality and Xi Wangmu's peaches of immortality. Heaven attempts to go to war against Wukong, but he defeats them all, completely unfazed by any of their assaults, even destroying a crucible designed to burn even Buddha itself.

With heaven utterly defeated, the immortals appeal to Buddha, who interviews Wukong, with him saying he should be the Jade Emperor. Buddha challenges Wukong to escape his palm. Initially thinking it was easy, thinking that his fingers were pillars, Wukong realises that in actuality, he hadn't escaped Buddha's palm at all. Buddha then punishes Wukong by imprisoning him beneath a mountain for 500 years. His hubris was his downfall.

After those 500 years, Sun Wukong becomes the disciple of pilgrim Tang Sanzang on a journey to India. Sanzang controls Wukong's violence through using a headband placed upon his head, of which Sanzang will recite a sutra to if Wukong gets out of hand, causing unbearable headaches. As they journey together, they are joined by Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing, who must atone for their own sins. On the journey, they together learn of numerous tenets of Buddhism. Eventually, he has his own spiritual awakening, becoming the Victorious Fighting Buddha and thus attaining Buddhahood.

Due to Journey to the West's popularity, real temples dedicated to Sun Wukong (usually under his epithet of Qitian Dasheng) were erected in places such as Fujian and Tainan (which was settled by migrants from Fujian).

Design

Most of Qitian Dasheng's designs in the Megami Tensei franchise have the character 斉 ("Equal") on his clothing, an allusion to his claim to be equal to heaven.

Nomenclature

Qitian Dasheng literally means "great sage, heaven's equal" and is a title Sun Wukong gives to himself in Journey to the West. Seiten Taisei is the Sino-Japanese reading of the same characters, and Son Gokū is the Sino-Japanese reading of his name.

His given name Wukong means "awakened to emptiness". His surname Sun literally means "grandson", but is a pun on a homophonous character used in one of the words for a macaque.
