Profile

A Tarot de Marseille Death card
A Rider-Waite-Smith Death card

In tarot, the Death is the thirteenth of the 21 trump cards, which are called "Major Arcana" in esoteric usage. The imagery originates from Italian tarocchi decks. The Death card typically features a skeletal figure wielding a scythe (the Grim Reaper); in some decks, the skeleton is riding a horse. The skeleton is often accompanied by corpses or dismembered body parts of people of various social statuses, showing that Death comes to all the same. The Tarot de Marseille omits the card's name.

The Rider-Waite-Smith deck dresses the skeleton in armor, replaces the scythe with a banner featuring a white "Mystic Rose" on a black field (representing life), and depicts it riding a white horse. The people nearby are alive though one awaits his end.[1] Esotericists often interpret Death as an allegory for transformation into the next stage of one's life.[1]

Arthur Edward Waite lists the following divinatory meanings in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot: "End, mortality, destruction, corruption; also, for a man, the loss of a benefactor; for a woman, many contrarieties; for a maid, failure of marriage projects. Reversed: Inertia, sleep, lethargy, petrifaction, somnambulism; hope destroyed."[2]

In Megami Ibunroku Persona, it is equivalent to the Reaper race.
