Origin

The loa, also spelled lwa, are spirits in Haitian Vodou.

Design

The loa is portrayed as a floating human skull with a blue-to-green python snake with a cream-colored underbelly and red eyes wrapped around and inside the eye sockets. In the Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei series it is depicted as just a dark-colored skull.

In illustrations for Shin Megami Tensei RPG: Kihon System, it is instead depicted as a snake with a human skull as its face.

Loa is named Sinister Scar in Jack Bros.

Loa appears as the second boss of the game, on Floor 5 of Grim Reaper's Cavern and Floor 8 overall. It initially attacks by firing skulls in all directions while approaching the player character. When its HP is dropped to a specific threshold, it will stop while the snake in its body lurches at the player; then, instead of shooting skulls, it will ricochet off the walls. The snake will periodically lurch again; said snake is invincible and takes 20 seconds off the player's time if it hits. Therefore, the player must only attack the skull itself.

Pixie says the following before dropping to its floor:

You must defeat Sinister Scar to escape here! When Scar stops moving, look out! You'll be attacked by a snake!
