Chernobog is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

According to Helmold of Bosau, a 12th century Catholic priest, the Polabian Slavs believed in a god named Chernobog (literally "black god") associated with misfortune. The reliability of Helmold's testimony is debatable.

Design

Chernobog's Shin Megami Tensei II and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner design was difficult to come up with due to no description other than the name's meaning of "black god". The design ultimately was based on the imagery of the Grim Reaper wielding a scythe,[1] with some influence from the character Golden Bat.[1][2]

Chernobog's Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers design is intended to have an "oriental" feel. He has a mushroom cap on his head because Chernobog sounds like Chernobyl, and the mushroom cap is also intended to look like an oriental hat.[2] His face resembles a skull, and his sword's crossguard and pommel have a stained glass pattern.

Translation: The Slavic Black God. He appears in the Slavic creation myth as the counterpart to the White God (Belobog). The two are the god of light and day, and the god of darkness and night, and their relationship is that of good and evil, standing in opposition to one another. The legend of the white and black gods survived even after various Slavic countries converted to Christianity, and even today the expression "May the Black God kill you!" still remains in the Ukraine.
