Baihu, also known as Byakko in some localizations,[a] is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Baihu (Chinese: 白虎, romanized Báihǔ), or the White Tiger, is one of the Four Symbols (Chinese: 四象, romanized Sìxiàng). It is mentioned in the Confucian I Ching (Simplified Chinese: 易经, Traditional Chinese: 易經, romanized Yìjīng)[b], as well as Daoist texts regarding the Five Elements. In these texts, Baihu represents the west, autumn, and metal. Additionally, it symbolises various stars in the solar system.

Being part of the Four Symbols, Baihu is paired with Zhuque, Xuanwu, and Qinglong. While the other three are among the Four Holy Beasts, it is replaced with the Qilin, in that system.

Design

Baihu is a white tiger with long locks of white fur on its face, chest, legs and tail tip. It typically appears with bright blue eyes, a visible spine and a long thin tail.

Notes

  1. Both refer the White Tiger asterism. Baihu is the original Chinese reading, while Byakko is the Japanese reading.
  2. The Wades-Giles transcription is more commonly used in the west, but a contemporary name would be Yi Jing using Hanyu Pinyin. James Legge translated the book name as the "Book of Changes".
