Persona 5 Royal is an enhanced edition of the 2016 role-playing game Persona 5, the sixth entry in the Persona series. It was developed and published by Atlus for the PlayStation 4 on October 31, 2019 in Japan, and subsequently worldwide in most other regions on March 31, 2020. In South Korea, the game released a month earlier on February 20, 2020. On October 21, 2022, Persona 5 Royal was re-released worldwide for the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam.

Persona 5 Royal features a number of quality of life improvements and new content additions, most notably the introduction of Kasumi Yoshizawa and Takuto Maruki as new characters as well as a new post-ending story scenario.

Gameplay Changes

Social Life Changes

  • Two new Confidants and Arcana were added, The Faith Arcana, represented by Kasumi Yoshizawa, and The Councillor Arcana, represented by Takuto Maruki
    • A third Arcana, "World" is added should one purchase the DLC for Izanagi-no-Okami, although that has no Confidant equivalent.
  • The Justice confidant was changed from a automatically progressing Confidant to a manually progressing one.
  • A new location, Kichijoji, was added.
  • The Time system has been adjusted
    • The crossword puzzle in LeBlanc's no longer passes time.
    • The player is allowed to do more events at night, including if the daytime portion is passed by story events.
  • Confidant abilities have been modified.
    • Party Member confidants have been changed to compensate for Baton Pass no longer being a Confidant reward.
  • "Third Awakenings" have been added, where maxed-out Party Confidants can obtain a third evolution in their Persona in the third semester.
  • The "Thieves Den" has been added, a cognetive place in which characters may interact with each other.

Battle Changes

Various battle changes have been added.

  • Personas now have traits, which are passive abilities
    • Traits can be generally passed on thru fusion.
  • Accessories have been changed to give you a additional "skill slot" which can be a passive skill or a new skill, inl
  • Guns have been changed.
    • Guns no longer have a limited amount of ammunition, now being "reloaded" at the end of each battle.
    • Guns can now be customized and upgraded to have various additional effects or stats.
  • Baton Pass is no longer unlocked thru Confidants, being unlocked by default.
    • Playing darts with characters will boost a new "Baton Pass Level", with each level them extra buffs for consecutively doing Baton Passes
  • Showtime attacks were added, which are team-up attacks that deal critical damage.
  • Various Persona Changes
    • Some Persona were moved from other Arcanas into the two new Arcanas, as well as new Personas.
    • Levels Personas may appear at were changed.
  • Mementos has been changed
    • Mementos has new music and aesthetics at different levels.
    • A new character, Jose, appears, who can trade in stamps found around Mementos into currency to purchase items.
    • The Reaper can no longer die automatically during "Pollen Warning" weather
  • The Alert Meter now starts partially filled at 20%
  • The Velvet Room has been given various mechanical changes
    • Fusion Alarms are a mechanic that now occur, which increases the effectiveness of fusions and other Velvet Room fusions, but has a high chance of a special Fusion Accident after the first action preformed in one.
    • A new set of battles have been added to the Velvet Room that give you rewards for a specific amount of points when clearing, with points being awarded for specific actions
  • Two new secret boss battles were added, for Lavenza and Jose
  • Palace Wardens have been given an additional boss phase.


Story Changes

  • The two scenes in which the protagonist and Ryuji is accosted by men from Shinjuku who were implied to be gay were rewritten to lessen the negative stereotypes of those scenes.
  • The third semester has been added.
  • Various new story segments have been added, including ones involving Kasumi Yoshizawa and Goro Akechi.
  • A new segment involving Kasumi awakening and the new Palace have been added between the fourth and fifth palace scenes.
  • Goro Akechi's Justice Arcana confidant was radically changed.
    • Events that would have "progressed" his confidant automatically in Persona 5 no longer do.
  • Some dialogue previously unvoiced in the game is now voiced.
  • Cameos have been given to Haru Okumura earlier in the game to compensate for her relatively late appearance in the game.

The game release for PS4 had multiple DLC bundles made for purchase. Previous DLC bundles for Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal were included with the game purchase for the 2022 re-releases on other platforms. DLC for Persona 5 Royal included the following bundles:[1]

  • Kasumi Costume Bundle: Over seven costumes for Kasumi, many themed from other Atlus games.
  • Battle Bundle: Challenges to fight for rewards, including the Persona 3 protagonist, Persona 4 protagonist, and Caroline & Justine, plus multiple item sets.
  • Persona Bundle: Late-game personas from several previous protagonists as well as a new Persona designed specifically for Royal.
  • Persona 5 Royal DLC Pack: Combined Kasumi Costume, Battle, and Persona bundles.
  • Persona 5 Royal Legacy Bundle: All of the original Persona 5 Game DLC.

2022 Re-release

As a part of Persona's 25th Anniversary, Persona 5 Royal was remastered for modern consoles. On October 20th, 2022 worldwide, Persona 5 Royal was released on Windows for Steam and the Microsoft Store, and consoles for the Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The Steam, Microsoft Store, and Xbox versions of the re-releases contained all downloadable content from both previous releases. The Steam and Microsoft Store versions also included other various improvements such as a higher frame rate cap and keyboard and mouse support.
