Origin

Vetala are a type of evil spirit in Hindu folklore. They are described as the spirits of the dead who roam the earth, trapped between the realms of life and death. Vetala are said to reside in or near charnel grounds, an ancient type of above-ground burial site. They possess the corpses of those interred in the charnel and use that body to roam the earth and disturb humans.
