In Persona 4 and Persona 4 Golden, Kanji is represented by the Emperor. Unlike the other party members, Kanji's Social Link does not begin automatically. Starting on June 9th, you can find girls gossiping about Kanji on the 2nd floor of the classroom building at Yasogami High School. After, you can talk to Kanji about their gossip to begin his Social Link. Maxing Kanji transfigures his Persona to Rokuten-Maoh, and he gives the protagonist a homemade Cute Strap that allows fusion of Odin.

Generally speaking, Kanji will be available for his Social Link on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday in the afternoon. He can be found on 1F of the Practice Building at Yasogami High School on school days, and the north map of the Central Shopping District on days off school.
There are some rules and exceptions and other things to note regarding his availability:
- Kanji will not always be available in the daytime if someone is still inside the TV.
- Sometimes, Kanji will be available on holidays that fall on days he normally would not be available.
- During December, Kanji's available days for his afternoon Social Link are December 9, 11, 14, 18, 21.[1]
- During the evening, Kanji can found in the north area of the Central Shopping District. As the availability chart notes, he is only available for evening hangouts on specific dates, though generally you can find him there on Monday and Thursday nights. Check the specific section for more about that.
- After unlocking Scooters, Kanji will appear on his bike at Moel Gas Station during the daytime for scooter rides on the following dates: September 5, 13, 23, October 3, 21, 24, November 8, 22, and January 13, 24, 30.[1] On these days, he will only be available for scooter rides, not his regular daytime Social Link. Furthermore, he will not be available if someone is inside the TV.

Kanji gains three different attacks which can occur randomly during battle:
- When the protagonist gets a One More, Kanji will sometimes offer to do a Follow-Up Attack called Atomic Pressure that can crit multiple enemies.
- When Kanji and Naoto are both in the party and an All-Out Attack fails to kill enemies, they will sometimes do a combo Follow-Up Attack called Beauty and the Beast.
- When Kanji is not in the party, the date is after August 23rd, and the protagonist Downs a Shadow, then he will sometimes do a Cavalry Attack where he rides in on his bike and crits multiple enemies.

After getting Kanji to rank 10 and transfiguring his Persona, then starting on January 11th, he has another Social Link event where his Persona changes again and he gains a new unique skill. This only happens in Golden.

In Golden, on certain dates, you can hang out with Kanji in the Central Shopping District during the evening. Which hangout you get is prioritized as follows: Limited > 1st time > 2nd time > generic. Dungeon Chats
When Kanji is not an active party member, he can sometimes be found in a room in the dungeon the protagonist and the main party are in. Depending on what rank his Social Link is, he might have special dialogue with another character who is also not in the active party. Kanji's possible dialogue partners are Yosuke, Naoto, Teddie, and the fox. Furthermore, he can give the protagonist an item once per day: Mom's Lunch or Bone Senbei.
Other Activities
Kanji is a playable character in Persona 4, joining the party on June 9th as the fifth playable character in the Investigation Team. Kanji wields a folding chair as well as the Persona Take-Mikazuchi, who specializes in heavy, high-powered physical & electric attacks, utilizing Tarukaja and Power Charge. Upon completion of the Emperor Social Link, Kanji's Persona will evolve to Rokuten-Maoh, boosting his stat points and getting rid of his Wind weakness.
Stats
In Persona 4 Golden, Kanji's moveset is put more in the direction of a tank. He no longer gains Power Charge by leveling up, and his social link instead gives him skills like the Regenerate line, eventually culminating in giving him Evade Wind, no longer blocking wind at the end of his Social Link. This cements Kanji as a tank-oriented character, while maintaining an emphasis on knockdowns and the Dizzy ailment with his normal skills.
During wintertime, if Kanji's social link is completed, he will ask to speak to the protagonist privately. This will unlock his final persona, Takeji-Zaiten. This grants him Resist Phys and Absorb Elec, as well as the unique skill The Man's Way. This skill gives him a chance of downing all enemies and inflicting them with the Dizzy ailment, calling back to his initial role in vanilla Persona 4.

In Persona 4 Arena and its sequel, Kanji acts as the archetypal grappler character, prioritizing up-close combat with grabs and tackles in tandem with Take-Mikazuchi. As well, their electric attacks can inflict the Shock status on his opponents, making them unable to move or jump. Kanji's basic movement options are somewhat slower compared to the rest of the playable characters, as is typical for grapplers in Arc System Works' games, so players may struggle to get in to effective range.
