Demeter is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Demeter is the Greek goddess of the harvest and agriculture. She is the second eldest child of the Titans Cronus and Rhea, and like her siblings was eaten by her father immediately upon birth out of fear of them surpassing him. She and the others were freed by their youngest sibling Zeus, who then joined forces to usurp the titans.

Demeter is notable as the mother Persephone with Zeus as her father. After Hades with Zeus' approval took Persephone as his bride, secreting her to the underworld without the knowledge of the other gods, Demeter was distraught and searched tirelessly to find her daughter. When Helios informed her he had seen Hades take Persephone to the underworld, Demeter was furious and refused to allow anything to grow resulting in mass starvation and deaths. Ultimately Zeus is forced to appease Demeter and requests Persephone be returned.

Design

Demeter was designed by Masayuki Doi for Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux. Rather than following the traditional depictions of the goddess as a mother, Doi chose to go against this depiction, aiming to make the player question whether she was an enemy or ally due to her innocent appearance. She is depicted as a young girl with short blond hair wearing a green dress to represent her status as a nature goddess, and holds a grain of rice in her right hand and a cornucopia overflowing with various harvests in her right, symbolising abundance and fertility respectively.
