Profile

Origin

Pottery depicting Poseidon (c. 500-450 BC)

Poseidon[a] is the ancient Greek deity of the sea and storms. He is the fifth and second youngest godly child of Cronus and Rhea, being eaten immediately upon his birth by his father. When his younger brother Zeus freed his siblings from within Cronus, Poseidon took up arms in the Titanomachy along with Zeus and their older brother Hades and was gifted the Trident as his weapon after freeing the elder cyclopes from Tartarus, becoming his divine symbol and having the power to create earthquakes whenever he strikes it against the earth, leading to one of his most prominent epithets being "Earthshaker". When the Olympians achieved victory over the Titans, he gained dominion over the sea when he cast lots with his brothers.[1]

Poseidon had many children, most notably the heroes Theseus and Bellerophon. When Theseus arrived in Crete to end Minos' tyranny over Athens, Minos challenged his parentage by throwing a ring over a cliff and demanding that Theseus retrieve it, only for Theseus to dive without hesitation and be guided by dolphins to Poseidon's undersea palace where he was given not only the ring but royal robes and a crown. When he emerged from the ocean in full regalia, he returned to ring to Minos and thus proved that Poseidon was his father. He is also father to many cyclopes, most notably Polyphemus. When Odysseus blinded Polyphemus and evaded retaliation by claiming his name was Nobody, as they escaped Odysseus taunted the cyclops by revealing his real name. Polyphemus prayed to his father to take revenge, with Poseidon manipulating the sea and storms to prevent Odysseus from returning to Ithaca until the intervention of other gods made him relent. He is also known as the father of horses having created them from sea foam, and was the father of Pegasus with Medusa, with horses being his divine animal due to these connections.

Various myths depict his rivalry with Athena, beginning at the founding of Athens. When competing for the right to be patron god the the newly founded city, Poseidon created a spring, offering to the city the promise of navel power and sea based trade. Athena instead created the olive tree, which provided food, oil, and wood. The king of the city chose Athena's gift and named the city after her. Ovid's Metamorphoses introduced the narrative the Neptune defiled the temple of Athena by having relations with Medusa, resulting in the goddess cursing Medusa with serpentine hair for the crime.

There is evidence that suggests that in earlier myths Poseidon was the ruler of the underworld with Demeter as his queen and Persephone as their daughter before Hades was solidified as a deity.

Design

In the Devil Children series, Poseidon is depicted as a ray. His tail resembles a trident, which is commonly associated with Poseidon in Greek iconography.
