Profile
Origin
Mars is a Roman god associated with warfare, also seen as a guardian of agriculture and protector of borders.[1] According to Roman tradition, Mars was the father of Romulus, the founder of the city of Rome, and of Romulus's brother Remus.[1] He is often referred to by the title Mars Ultor, meaning "Mars the Avenger".
His main temple was located outside the Porta Capena and was dedicated in 388 BC. It was the starting point of the transvectio equitum, an annual parade. Several other temples were built for him in Rome, including the Temple of Mars in Clivo in the Campus Martius and the Temple of Mars Ultor in the Forum Augustum.[1]
Mars was identified with the Greek god Ares by the 3rd century BC at the latest. Under Greek influence, he was paired with Venus as his consort, replacing earlier associations with Nerio and Bellona.[1]
The month of March and the planet Mars are named for Mars. The month of March was considered the start of the fighting season.[1]
