Origin

Amun-Ra

Amun (also spelled Amon, Amen, or Ammon, among other variants)[a] was the Egyptian god of the air, and was one of the most important gods in the Egyptian pantheon, considered the king of the gods since the Middle Kingdom era. In later eras, the sun god Ra would be combined with Amun to form Amun-Ra, a deity with the aspects of both Amun and Ra.

During the Hellenistic period, Amun would be identified with Zeus. Ancient accounts claim that the prophet of Ammon at Siwa addressed Alexander the Great as the son of Ammon. Plutarch says in his Parallel Lives that some believe that this was a misunderstanding due to the priest's foreign accent.[b]

Design

Amen Ra's design from Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner resembles the design of Ra from Shin Megami Tensei if..., and is reminiscent of Egyptian depictions of Amun or Amun-Ra. His staff is meant to symbolize his role as a sun god, and the peacock feathers on his headwear are based on the feathers on the headwear of actual depictions of Amun or Amun-Ra.[1]

In Egypt, trends in the pantheon were greatly influenced by the beliefs of the royal family. Amen was not originally a prominent god, but he gained traction starting around the time the nobility of Thebes ruled Egypt, becoming one with the sun god Ra, also known as "the father of the gods", and he was worshiped by the people.

First portrayed as a goose, he was later associated with the ram, an association which has stuck.

Amun Ra once sat on the Throne of Creation as the Nahobino that ruled the universe, before inevitably being usurped as dictated by the Mandala System. By the time of the game he has been reduced to the form of Amon, having lost his divinity.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance

Through conversation with Thoth at Bethel Egypt, it is revealed that Atum failed to claim the Throne of Creation due to the curse placed on it by Marduk that prevented any that carried the aspect of the serpent to claim the Throne. As a result, Atum relinquished the Winged Sun and the power of Ra to Amun, who was able to claim the Throne in his place.[2]
