Books are a recurring mechanic in the Persona series.
Overview
Books were first introduced as a mechanic in Persona 4. Each book has varying amounts of chapters the protagonist can read, and finishing a book grants bonuses such as Social Stats or assistance with other activities.
Mechanics by Game
Persona 3 Reload
Books are a night time activity at Iwatodai Dorm with fellow S.E.E.S. members. Doing this three times with each of them will either unlock or upgrade their Characteristics. Reading with them will also grant Social Stats points. If a Social Link is established with a character, +1 Social Links points will be granted as well.

Persona 4
Books can be purchased from Yomenaido Bookstore, obtained from Quests, or obtained from Social Links. The protagonist can read 1-2 chapters at a time in his bedroom at the Dojima Residence. Each reading session increases his Social Stats by the amount under the "Effect" column regardless of how many chapters he reads. Each book can only be read once. Reading all of the books rewards the Reader King accessory which increases Magic +10.

Persona 4 Golden
Golden adds new books that help with Part-Time Jobs, Gardening, Fishing, and other activities. After finishing a book, the protagonist gains a Social Stat boost or another effect. Furthermore, reading during bad weather also grants the protagonist Social Stats depending on which book he's reading. Reading all of the books rewards the Reader King accessory which increases Magic +10 and unlocks an achievement.

Joker can buy books or borrow one from the school library. In addition to reading in the library or at Leblanc, Joker can also read on the way to school if he scores a seat, and also in the middle of class if Temperance is high enough.

Persona 4: Dancing All Night
Books can be purchased from Tanaka's Amazing Commodities. Once a book is bought, an option will appear in the Free Dance custom settings that lets the player enable its effects. Books are all considered Game Settings modifiers and, when enabled, make clearing tracks more difficult while increasing the rewards earned.

On some days the protagonist is able to read a book on the train, these occur every 3 or 4 days, alternating. If the protagonist does not possess an unfinished book, he will instead receive random social stats.

In Persona 4, the protagonist can obtain books from four different series:
- The Amazing Khan Saga or the Man's World series (Japanese: 漢の世界シリーズThe Man's World series)
- The Bullied Teacher series (Japanese: 弱虫先生シリーズThe Cowardly Teacher series)
- Manuals, which are all titled "The X Way" (Japanese: 入門書シリーズThe Beginner's Guide series)
- Young Readers (Japanese: 低年齢向けFor young kids)
In-universe, one of the teachers at Yasogami High, Hosoi, is a fan of the Bullied Teacher series.
Persona 4: Dancing All Night
During Dancing, Tanaka's store sells new books from the Man's World, Bullied Teacher, and Manual series.

Persona 4 The Animation
In episode 14, Yu is shown reading the book Changing Careers in his bedroom. During dinner, he told his uncle and Adachi that he was helping a fox out, but both of them started laughing at him and assumed he was joking. As he reads the book, he sees the sentence, "...even if I say it, people will just laugh at me." He comments out loud, remarking on how true this is due to what happened at dinner.
