Tangata Manu is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Tangata Manu (from Rapa Nui, lit. "bird-man") was the title given to the winner of an annual ritualistic competition on the island of Rapa Nui. Adult men of importance on the island would appoint hopu, men of lesser status, to swim out to the islet of Mota Nui in order to obtain the first egg laid by the sooty tern of the season. Once a hopu obtained the egg, he would call out his sponsor's name and say "Go shave your head, you have got the egg!", remaining on Mota Nui and fasting while the unsuccessful hopu swam back to the mainland. Then, securing the egg in a reed basket tied to his forehead, he would swim back and present the egg to his sponsor. That sponsor was declared the Tangata Manu and would hold a procession across Rapa Nui, being granted gifts and tribute as well as exclusive rights to all wild bird eggs foraged from Motu Nui, before entering seclusion in a dedicated ceremonial house for five months. The cult's practice was ended in the 1860s shortly after the arrival of Christian missionaries.
