Azhi Dahaka, also known as simply Dahaka, is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Aži Dahāka,[a] also known as Zahhāk,[b] is the antagonist of an ancient Iranian heroic narrative who is ultimately defeated by the hero Fereydun.

In earlier sources such as the Avesta, Aži Dahāka is portrayed as a dragon with three heads, though his behavior is not any different in manner from human figures in the Avesta.[1] As a result, a form of Aži Dahāka's name, اژدها aždahā, would become a common noun in Persian referring to dragons.[1]

In the Shahnameh's version of the tale, Zahhāk is portrayed as a human king of Tāzī (Arab) heritage. Zahhāk was convinced by Iblīs to kill his father and become king of the Tāzīs. Later, Iblīs then disguised himself as a cook, feeding Zahhāk meat. In return, Iblīs asked only to kiss Zahhāk's shoulders, and after he did so, snakes sprouted out from Zahhāk's shoulders. According to Iblīs, the only way to calm the snakes was to feed them human brains. Meanwhile, the Iranian king Jamšēd had lost the favor of the nobility, and rebel nobles deposed Jamšēd and made Zahhāk their king.[2] Zahhāk reigned over Iran for a thousand years, every night feeding the snakes the brains of two youths. A blacksmith named Kāwa declared Zahhāk to be Ahrēman and started a rebellion. The hero Farēdūn, guided by Surōš, joined the rebellion and bound Zahhāk at Mount Damāwand.[3]
