Origin

Apophis (also known as Apep) was the serpent of chaos and the eternal enemy of Ra. While some accounts claim he was born from Ra's umbilical cord, it is commonly accepted that Apep existed from the beginning of time. Apep resides under the horizon in the Duat, where he battles with Ra every night, and his roars are said to create earthquakes. Though Ra is always victorious, emerging from the Duat as the morning sun, Apep returns and must be battled again when Ra returns to the Duat as the setting sun. To ward off Apep's evil, Egyptian priests would create wax models of Apep that they would then ritually desecrate as described in The Books of Overthrowing Apep. Due to the fear of Apep, any depiction of him would be accompanied by a god as a way to diminish his power.
