Guardians are a mechanic in Shin Megami Tensei if... and Shin Megami Tensei: J.
Overview
In Shin Megami Tensei if..., human characters cannot die permanently within the Makai, upon death they are given a new Guardian depending on their in game general behaviors. Guardians are untethered demon souls that enter the body of a human and give them powers.[1]

Guardian-Exclusive Demons
This is a list of demons and characters that are only obtainable in the game as Guardians. Some of them may appear as rare enemies on specific tiles in dungeons, but cannot be recruited or fused. Alice has a small chance of appearing when the Protagonist opens a mystical chest on a full moon, upon which she'll demand the gemstone contained inside and will initiate a battle if the Protagonist refuses.
Should the Protagonist or their partner have any of the enemy-exclusive demons listed below as their current Guardian, those specific demons cannot be encountered. This includes the Alice event, which will not occur. The trio consisting of The Hero, Law Hero, and Chaos Hero is special in that having any of them as a Guardian will also prevent the other two from appearing as enemies.
Rare Guardians have a 1/256 chance of becoming the Protagonist's Guardian if the Protagonist dies during a full moon.

- The Guardian mechanic, and by extension Shin Megami Tensei if..., were a major inspiration behind the development of Megami Ibunroku Persona. In Persona Official Perfect Guide for Persona, Persona EXP is referred to as Guardian Points[a] or GP.
- Despite it being claimed that humans cannot die in the Makai, undead students and teachers frequently appear as enemy encounters.
