Origin

Fudō Myō-ō is the Japanese form of Acala, a wrathful deity and Wisdom King in Vajrayana and East Asian Buddhism. The name Fudō Myō-ō means "Immovable Wisdom King" and is derived from the Chinese name Bùdòng Míngwáng, a translation of Acala's Sanskrit name. In Buddhist tradition, Acala was originally described as a messenger or servant of Vairocana before becoming an independent object of veneration and one of the principal Wisdom Kings in East Asian esoteric Buddhism.

Acala was introduced to Japan during the Heian period, where he became an important deity in Japanese esoteric Buddhism and was particularly associated with the Shingon school founded by Kūkai. In Japan, Fudō Myō-ō is regarded as a direct emanation of Dainichi Nyorai and is one of the most widely venerated of the Wisdom Kings.
