Makoto Yuki is a major character and the protagonist of Persona 3 and its spin-offs, as well as a member and field leader of S.E.E.S. in universe. In Persona 3 Portable, his female counterpart is Kotone Shiomi. The name Makoto Yuki was originally the protagonist's name in the Persona 3 The Movie tetralogy, later adopted for Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight. The name became the protagonist's default name in the 2023 re-release of Persona 3 Portable, which the game defaults to if its text language settings are changed.[1]

In game, the protagonist acts as the Wild Card of the group, having the ability to wield and swap multiple Personas at once during battle, as well as having the ability to fuse said Personas in the Velvet Room.

Profile

The protagonist is a teenager of average towards slim contexture for his age. His hair is a shade lighter than navy blue, and is longer than average, styled with a long fringe that covers one of his eyes, which are depicted as light gray in most of his appearances, and dark blue in Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight and Persona 3 Reload. As his classmates, he wears the Gekkoukan High School Winter Uniform in most of the media, also wearing his ATH-model headphones and the S.E.E.S. armband. Other outfits he wears lean into a gray, beige and/or blue palette, as shown by his Winter and Summer outfits, as well as his yukata.

In Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight, he also wears a modified Gekkoukan High School Uniform, featuring a white shirt with red writing, more slim headphones and pop-patterned sneakers. In Persona 3 Reload, he gains an upgraded Battle Gear that integrates a redesigned armband that allows him to use Theurgy attacks. As a minor addition, he also wears gloves.

Gameplay

For complete gameplay information, see Gameplay:Makoto Yuki.

The protagonist is a Wild Card who starts with Orpheus as his initial Persona and can wield multiple Personas in battle. By visiting the Velvet Room, he can fuse new Personas, setting him apart from his allies. Additionally, by having certain Personas to be summoned, he can use Fusion Spells to do a variety of effects. In Persona 3 Portable, Fusion Spells instead can be achieved by visiting the Shinsoudo Antiques. In Persona 3 Reload, the same effect can be achieved with his Theurgy, and players are only required to have the Personas needed for the specific Theurgy to be in the Compendium. By researching internet websites on the Iwatodai Dorm computer, the protagonist can also learn new field skills for ambushing Shadows in Tartarus. In battle, the protagonist is able to use a variety of weapons that can deal all sorts of damage type. He must be in the party at all times, and dying would have players receive a game over. In Portable and Reload, he would later stick to his one handed sword that deals Slash damage to his opponents.

The protagonist later appears in Persona Q and Persona Q2, as well as a main dancer in Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight.

Persona 3

On April 6th, 2009, the protagonist moves to Tatsumi Port Island as a transfer student to Gekkoukan High School. Three days later, he enters the Dark Hour, a supernatural 25th hour where Shadows roam, is caught up in a Shadow attack on the Iwatodai Dormitory and awakens to the power of Persona, with the initial Persona Orpheus. The protagonist learns that his dormmates are actually members of the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (S.E.E.S.), a group dedicated to fighting Shadows. The protagonist is inducted into S.E.E.S. and named their field commander due to his unique ability to control multiple Personas, the Wild Card.

Over the course of the next several months, with the aid of the inhabitants of the Velvet RoomIgor and Elizabeth—the protagonist leads S.E.E.S. in battle in order to bring an end to the Dark Hour. Together, S.E.E.S. explores Tartarus, a massive tower that appears in place of Gekkoukan High during the Dark Hour.

Eventually, S.E.E.S. defeats the twelve fragments, but the Dark Hour is not destroyed. They learn destroying the fragments will allow Death to return to its full power and summon the maternal being, Nyx, and bring about the Fall, the end of humanity.

Death later manifests in the form of new Gekkoukan transfer student, Ryoji Mochizuki. It is revealed that in 1999, the Kirijo Group's experiments on the Shadows went disastrously awry, unleashing the most powerful shadow, Death. The Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapon Aigis pursued and battled Death, causing a car crash that killed the protagonist's parents and left him the sole survivor. Aigis, unable to defeat Death, sealed a portion of its power in the protagonist.

Ryoji offers the protagonist a choice—kill him and allow SEES to live out the remainder of their lives in blissful ignorance, or let him live and make a futile attempt to delay the inevitable. In the bad ending, the protagonist kills Ryoji and is last seen ignorantly singing karaoke right before the Fall. In the good ending, the protagonist spares Ryoji. On January 31st, 2010, S.E.E.S. ascends to the top of Tartarus and defeats Ryoji's true form, Nyx Avatar, in battle, but are powerless to stop the Fall. The protagonist ascends to face Nyx and expends all of his life force to create a seal to protect the Earth from her.

The protagonist spends the next two months living a regular life with his friends, getting more tired and weaker as the days go by, before passing away peacefully in Aigis's arms on March 5, 2010.

End of spoilers.
