Makoto Yuki is a playable character and the protagonist of Persona 3 and its spin-offs. In Persona 3 Portable, his female counterpart is Kotone Shiomi. The name Makoto Yuki was originally the protagonist's name in the Persona 3 The Movie tetralogy, later adopted for Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight. The name became the protagonist's default name in the 2023 re-release of Persona 3 Portable, which the game defaults to if its text language settings are changed.[1]

Appearance

Yuki is a teenager of average towards slim contexture for his age. His hair, like his eyes, is a shade lighter than navy blue, and is longer than average, styled with a long fringe that covers one of his eyes. As his classmates, he wears the Gekkokkan High School Winter Uniform in most of the media, also wearing his ATH-model headphones and the S.E.E.S. armband. Other outfits he wears lean into a gray, beige and/or blue palette, as shown by his Winter and Summer outfits, as well as his Yukata.

In Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight, he also wears a modified Gekkokkan High School Uniform, featuring a white shirt with red writing, more slim headphones and pop-patterned sneakers. In Persona 3 Reload, he gains an upgraded Battle Gear that integrates a redesigned armband that allows him to use Theurgy attacks. As a minor addition, he also wears gloves.

Gameplay

Persona 3 / Persona 3 FES

As the Fool, Makoto can summon multiple Personas from the sea of his soul. Unique to the Persona 3 protagonists, Makoto can also perform Fusion Spells by summoning two Personas at the same time. Makoto is able to wield all weapon types available in the game except guns and knives, while the rest of S.E.E.S. is restricted to one weapon type.

Persona 3 Portable

In Portable, Makoto is no longer able to wield all weapon types and is restricted to one handed swords. An item is now required to perform Fusion Spells which can be obtained from Shuffle Time in Tartarus.

Persona 5 Royal

The Personas he uses in the fight are Orpheus, Attis, Siegfried, Thanatos and Messiah.

Persona 3 Reload

In Reload, Makoto's Fusion Spells are translated into Theurgy Spells. By summoning and using different Personas, Makoto's Theurgy bar will fill[2], allowing him to use Theurgy Spells.

The Journey

On April 6th, 2009, Makoto moves to Tatsumi Port Island as a transfer student to Gekkoukan High School. Three days later, he enters the Dark Hour, a supernatural 25th hour where Shadows roam, is caught up in a Shadow attack on the Iwatodai Dormitory and awakens to the power of Persona, with the initial Persona Orpheus. Makoto learns that his dormmates are actually members of the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (S.E.E.S.), a group dedicated to fighting Shadows. Makoto is inducted into SEES and named their field commander due to his unique ability to control multiple Personas, the Wild Card.

Over the course of the next several months, with the aid of the inhabitants of the Velvet Room - Igor and Elizabeth - Makoto leads S.E.E.S. in battle in order to bring an end to the Dark Hour and exploring Tartarus, a massive tower that appears in place of Gekkoukan High during the Dark Hour.

Eventually, S.E.E.S. defeats the twelve fragments, but the Dark Hour is not destroyed. They learn destroying the fragments will allow Death to return to its full power and summon the maternal being, Nyx, and bring about the Fall, the end of humanity.

Death later manifests in the form of new Gekkoukan transfer student, Ryoji Mochizuki. It is revealed that in 1999, the Kirijo Group's experiments on the Shadows went disastrously awry, unleashing the most powerful shadow, Death. The Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapon Aigis pursued and battled Death, causing a car crash that killed Makoto's parents and left him the sole survivor. Aigis, unable to defeat Death, sealed a portion of its power in Makoto.

Ryoji offers Makoto a choice - kill him and allow SEES to live out the remainder of their lives in blissful ignorance, or let him live and make a futile attempt to delay the inevitable. In the bad ending, Makoto kills Ryoji and is last seen ignorantly singing karaoke right before the Fall. In the good ending, Makoto spares Ryoji. On January 31st, 2010, S.E.E.S ascends to the top of Tartarus and defeats Ryoji's true form, the Nyx Avatar in battle, but are powerless to stop the Fall. Makoto ascends to face Nyx and expends all of his life force to create a seal to protect the Earth from her.

Makoto spends the next two months living a peaceful life with his friends before dying peacefully in Aigis' arms on March 5, 2010.

The Answer

After Makoto's death, the collective manifestation of S.E.E.S.' grief over Makoto's death creates a new Shadow nest called the Abyss of Time. S.E.E.S. investigates and learns that Makoto's soul is bound to a Great Seal in order to prevent Erebus, the collective manifestation of humanity's desire for death, from reaching Nyx and bringing about the Fall. After SEES defeats Erebus, Elizabeth departs the Velvet Room on a journey hoping to find a way to save Makoto from his fate.

End of spoilers.
