Origin

Siegfried is a character from German folklore who is a major character in the first half of the Nibelungenlied. He is a prince of the city of Xanten who slays a dragon and bathes in its blood.

A number of details in the legend of Siegfried are very similar to Scandinavian and Icelandic legends of a figure known as Sigurd. Richard Wagner's opera Der Ring des Nibelungen combined some elements of the stories of Sigurd with that of Siegfried, including the name of the dragon being given as Fafner.

Design

Siegfried's skin is red because he bathed in dragon's blood, and the outline of the leaf covering his shoulder that left him vulnerable is visible.
