Messiah is a Persona in the Persona series.

Profile

Origin

"Messiah" is a term used in the three major Abrahamic religions, derived from a Hebrew word meaning "anointed one"; its Greek equivalent is "Christ". In Christianity and Islam, the Messiah is identified as Jesus of Nazareth.

Second-Temple Jewish thought posited that a king from the Davidic line would come and bring deliverance to the Jewish people. The criteria are best spelled out in Ezekiel 37:24-48, and must all be fulfilled at once. They are as follows:

1. They must be Jewish.
2. They must be a member of the tribe of Judah.
3. They must descend from the lineage of King David and King Solomon.
4. They must gather the Jewish people and return them to Eretz Israel.
5. They must rebuild the temple in Jerusalem.
6. They will rule during a time of world peace.
7. They will rule during a time where the 10 Verses (or "Commandments") are observed.
8. They will rule during a time where everyone acknowledges and serves YHVH.

Thus far, in Judaism, no one has met all of these criteria at once, and thus, Jesus of Nazareth is not accepted as the Messiah; therefore, in Judaism, Jews are still waiting for the messiah's arrival.

Comparative religion sometimes uses "Messiah" or "messianic figure" generically to mean someone prophesied to bring salvation. Examples of these more general messianic figures are Maitreya in Buddhism, the Saoshyant in Zoroastrianism, and the Mahdi in Islam.
