Origin

"Messiah"[a] is a term used in the three major Abrahamic religions, derived from a Hebrew word meaning "anointed one"; its Greek equivalent is "Christ".[b] The concept of the Messiah originates in Judaism.

Since the Second Temple period, Jewish thought has posited that the Messiah is a king from the Davidic line who will come and bring deliverance to the Jewish people. The criteria are best spelled out in Ezekiel 37:24-48, and must all be fulfilled at once. They are as follows:

  1. They must be Jewish.[1]
  2. They must be a member of the tribe of Judah.[2]
  3. They must descend from the lineage of King David and King Solomon.[3]
  4. They must gather the Jewish people and return them to Eretz Israel.[4]
  5. They must rebuild the temple in Jerusalem.[5]
  6. They will rule during a time of world peace.[6]
  7. They will rule during a time where the 10 Verses (or "Commandments") are observed.[7]
  8. They will rule during a time where everyone acknowledges and serves YHVH.[8]

Thus far, in Judaism, no one has met all of these criteria at once; therefore, Jews are still waiting for the Messiah's arrival.

In both Christianity[9] and Islam,[10] the Messiah is identified as Jesus of Nazareth. The Christian and Islamic interpretations of the Messiah's role differ from both that of Judaism and from that of each other. Christianity sees the Messiah (or Christ) as the Son of God who is the savior of all peoples and will come again as the judge of the living and the dead. Islam views the Messiah as an important messenger of God who will come again to unite Muslims and defeat the false Messiah (al-Masīḥ ad-Dajjāl).

Comparative religion sometimes uses "Messiah" or "messianic figure" generically to mean someone prophesied to bring salvation. Examples of these more general messianic figures are Maitreya in Buddhism, the Saoshyant in Zoroastrianism, and the Mahdi in Islam. In the context of Persona 3, in-game profiles seem to indicate that the Messiah Persona represents the general archetype, and Persona Club P3 says that Messiah does not represent a specific mythological figure but is a common Hebrew word whose meaning comes from Judaism.[11] However, Persona 3 FES Official Fanbook: My Episode speaks specifically of the Christian concept of the Messiah as both a savior and the eschatological judge of mankind.[12]

  • During development of Persona 3, Messiah was originally planned to be impossible to create unless every Social Link other than Judgement was maxed.[13]
