Erebus is a character in Persona 3 FES: The Answer and Persona 3 Reload: Episode Aigis.
Profile
Origin
Erebus is an original creation for Persona 3, though it is named after Erebus, the Greek personification of darkness, son of Chaos, and the husband of Nyx in Greek creation cosmogony. Together with Nyx, they created Aether, the personification of the bright sky, and Hemera, the personification of day. Depending on the interpretation, Erebus also created Thanatos, Hypnos and Moros. This ties to the character named for Nyx, and the Personas of Thanatos, Hypnos and Moros belonging to characters in the game.
Design
Erebus appears as a two-headed, quadrupedal creature made from the upper bodies of the human male and female forms, conjoined together at the waist. The male half, the front, faces downwards as if crawling, while the female half, the hind, has its chest facing upwards; both halves use their arms as support to form the creature's "legs". Both bodies have heads made only of jaws attached to long horns, with glowing, floating red orbs as their eyes. The male head's horns face inwards, while the female's face outwards. Erebus's grey skin hangs off the sides of its body in tatters, and darkness pours from its body.

Erebus is the collective human thoughts of death and despair. Erebus making contact with Nyx resulted in The Fall, which could bring about the end of all life. In Persona 3: The Answer, S.E.E.S. learns the protagonist used his life's essence to create the Great Seal. When Erebus appears attempting to break the Great Seal, Fuuka realizes it is not a shadow, but the mass of all of humanity's desire for death. The Great Seal prevents Erebus from contacting Nyx, which would result in The Fall and the end of the world.
Although S.E.E.S. defeats Erebus, they realize it cannot truly be destroyed until the heart of every person stops wishing for death. Together, they vow to keep moving forward and hopefully change society to ease the protagonist's burden.

Erebus returns in Elizabeth's story. Once a year, she returns to the Sea of Souls to vanquish Erebus in order to lessen the Protagonist's burden of being the Great Seal. After meeting and fighting with the Investigation Team, Elizabeth truly begins to understand the strength of bonds. Awakening to the Fool Arcana, she vows to find a way to save the Protagonist from his fate.
