Gameplay
Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner
Varna is Serph's Atma Avatar, which he transforms into at the beginning of battles unless the party is ambushed. He is weak to Fire and resists Ice, unlike his human form which nullifies Expel and is weak to Death. Furthermore, Varna cannot use Serph's handgun, but is capable of using all of his set skills.
As the player character, Varna's stats are decided by the player, where they can distribute 3 points to his stats every level. His skills are determined by the Mantra he has mastered, where any of the skills he has learned can be freely added to or removed from his skill set outside of battle. Varna initially has 4 skill slots available, gaining 2 at level 10 and another 2 at level 20 for a total of 8.
Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2
Varna behaves the same as in Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner, though transferring data from that game to Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2 grants a number of benefits, including giving Varna additional stats at the start of the game depending on how many Mantra Serph had mastered, up to +5 in all stats.

The opening of the object at Ground Zero grants everyone in the Junkyard Atma. This initial infection causes most of them, Serph included, to immediately transform into their Avatars in a berserk state. As Varna, Serph and the other Embryon on site begin fighting and devouring the present Vanguards, then fall unconscious, forgetting most of the conflict. They awaken to discover that the Vanguards disappeared and a black-haired girl is in the crater left by the mysterious object. Her name is later revealed to be Sera, and the Embryon take her back to their base in Muladhara.
Later, seeking information from the Vanguards, the Embryon enter their base at Svadhisthana and encounter their leader, Harley, who was traumatized by the event and is fearful of the Embryon, causing him to awaken to his personality. Argilla, in denial of his accusations, awakens to her own personality and shoots down his soldiers, who begin transforming into Ghouls. This causes the Embryon to transform into their Avatars, this time in control of themselves. They use their power to reach Harley, then kill him once he transforms into Hayagriva.
After Harley's death, Serph and the other tribe leaders are summoned to Sahasrara by Angel. There, they explain the nature of Atma and give a new commandment to the warriors of the Junkyard: to reach Nirvana, one tribe must stand alone and bring Sera to the gates. This, combined with the development of emotions, personalities and Atma within the Junkyard's residents allows for the long-lasting stalemate between the tribes to be broken.
From that point, the Embryon begin strategizing on how to conquer the Junkyard with their new power. They initially ally themselves with the Maribel against the Solids, but are betrayed by Bat, forcing them to kill Jinana and losing Sera to Mick the Slug. They recover Sera at Coordinate 136, killing Mick, but letting Bat escape to join the Brutes. They finally kill Bat by blowing up the Deserted Ship with him in it, then are summoned back to Svadhisthana by Lupa, who seeks to ally the Wolves and the Embryon against the Brutes, having been defeated by Varin Omega alone. Lupa falls victim to Varin's Hunger Wave, causing him to attack the Embryon, but is ultimately killed. Reaching their base in Ajna through the Samsara Tunnels, the Embryon defeat Varin Omega, winning the war.
Sera disappears to Sahasrara, having regained her memories, and the Embryon follow her despite her interference as Cyber Shaman and creator of the virtual world that was seized to become the Junkyard. At the top of the Karma Temple, Sera confronts Angel, now personally present in the Junkyard and in control of it. Angel muses that, despite the fact that she created the Atma Virus over five years, Sera is able to control the Junkyard's residents with ease, including threatening her own life with a Rakshasa, who is promptly deleted by Angel. The Embryon reach the top themselves as the Junkyard is beginning to be deleted and fight against Angel's Atma, Harihara, despite Sera initially commanding them to stop. This results in the destruction of the Control Sphere, dooming the Junkyard.

The Embryon, now present in the physical world, retain their Atma from their time in the Junkyard.
During the events of the EGG Facility, Serph is stabbed by Heat and both fall into the EGG. He is presumed dead, forcing Gale to take over his role. Later, Sera inherits Serph's Atma, gaining the ability to become Varnani. During the second visit to the Facility, she and the remaining Embryon defeat Heat, having mutated his Atma into Vritra. Serph is revealed to be alive inside the EGG's fluid and is told by Schrödinger of his origins as Sera's digital recreation of Serph Sheffield, which distresses him, but he is comforted by the data of Heat O'Brien. There, they are confronted by the data of Sheffield and the digital Serph that existed prior to the Junkyard. O'Brien helps Serph defeat Sheffield, who took the form of Real Varna, and the other Serph, who took the form of Fake Varna, putting them to rest to join the circulation of data.
Serph and Sera, in a final attempt to contact Brahman, die in the HAARP Facility, ascending to the Sun. There, they fuse into Seraph, who have a new Atma: Ardha.
