Jenna Angel, known only as Angel in Quantum Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner, is a character in the Digital Devil Saga series.

Profile

In the Digital Devil Saga games, Jenna Angel is the Chief Technical Director of the Karma Society, and formerly a member of the International Environmental Stabilization Comittee. She is responsible for several discoveries regarding the influence of sunrays on Earth, and developed the Atma virus over five years. She harbors hatred towards the current state of humanity, and believes all people should be judged by their Karma. Angel generally acts confidently, but is prone to becoming emotional regarding personal matters. Her Atma is Harihara. Her brand, named "Maelstrom", is located on her chest; it resembles a spiral with a mouth in the center. Jenna Angel is a hermaphrodite, which allowed her to be the sole biological parent of Sera, though she does not show affection towards her child.

In Quantum Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner, Angel was a child born in a cult known as the "Temple of the Sun's Salvation" from an incestuous pregnancy. Due to this, they were born as a true hermaphrodite with XXY chromosomes and received God's data, which radiated from their body as electromagnetic waves similar to those from the Sun, causing Cuvier Syndrome. Additionally, they were only able to perceive digital data, being completely unresponsive to anything else. Angel lost their connection to God once they experienced menarche, and was raised by Margot Cuvier as a normal human. Later, Angel willingly gave their reproductive organs for the creation of Sera, becoming sexless biologically and in appearance, which is speculated to be due to the trauma of losing contact with God as a result of developing as a woman. Though they lost their connection to God, they are still able to withstand His data and could identify Sera's location on their own. As an adult, Angel is stern, but not emotionless, and is severely envious of Sera due to their Technoshaman abilities.

Game Appearances

Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner

Prior to the events of Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner, Jenna Angel managed to gain limited control over the Junkyard. This allows her to spread the Atma virus she had been developing for 5 years, infecting every one of the Junkyard's inhabitants for the dual purpose of testing it and using them to retrieve Sera.

Jenna Angel initially conceals her true identity under the avatar of Angel, though Varin Omega sees through it after regaining his memories, and Gale recognizes her on sight after awakening to his own personality and memories. She is idle during most of the conflict in the Junkyard as she awaits for the victorious tribe to bring Sera to her, only appearing to decree the new commandment of the Karma Temple and to lend Varin her Hunger Wave ability after gaining more control over the Junkyard.

After the Embryon win the war in the Junkyard, Sera regains her memories and climbs the Karma Temple on her own accord, intending to confront Angel on her own. Angel appears there personally, intending to take Sera back with her for her own purposes. She reveals that she has gained full access to the Junkyard, using it to delete Sera's Rakshasa and begin deleting the Junkyard. The Embryon reach the top of the Temple themselves and engage Angel in battle, despite Sera's commands, which results in the destruction of Angel's control mechanism. This dooms the Junkyard to destruction, forcing them to escape.

Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2

Roland reveals to the Embryon that Jenna Angel, in her former occupation as a member of the International Environmental Stabilization Comittee, discovered that data from the Sun was responsible for several maladies affecting humanity since the end of the 20th century. It was also there that she met David Gale, who would become her partner. David's eventual death due to a terrorist attack would cause Angel to develop a hatred for humanity.

Angel, after retrieving Sera, plans to lobotomize her according to guidelines, but Margot Cuvier appeals to her humanity and claims that the procedure is unnecessary. This causes Angel to suspect that Cuvier has an ulterior motive and begins plotting her betrayal in the name of giving all humans an equal chance in society through Karma and natural selection. Once she discovers that the Embryon somehow emerged into reality, she plans to allow them to take Sera and gives them access to the EGG Installation. She is cornered by Cuvier's soldiers in her office, but ultimately kills them. Later, in the Installation, after the Sun begins downloading the Earth's data, Angel finds Cuvier despairing over the end of humanity and kills her with a revolver, then takes over the Karma Society.

Angel then mobilizes to retrieve Sera for her own purposes, assaulting the Power Plant that the Embryon and Lokapala were infiltrating, but were stalled by the Lokapala's tactics. This prompts Angel to release Meganada to break through their hold, forcing Roland and Argilla to sacrifice themselves. Angel, having lost most of her forces, then occupies the Airport, knowing the Embryon would need a plane to reach the HAARP Facility, and meets with them directly before they reach the hangar. She initially tries to convince them that, given Sera's condition and the possibility that she ordered the planes to be destroyed, their efforts would be in vain, but Gale calls her bluff and stays behind to remind her of David's love for her and humanity. Angel loses control of her emotions and pierces Gale with Harihara's arm, then is pierced by Vayu's arm herself, killing them both.

Angel's data ascends to the Sun, where she gives the Reincarnate skill to Seraph if certain dialogue choices were made.

In the future, after humanity recovered from the Black Sun, there is a child bearing Angel's name and likeness under the care of a now adult Fred.

Novel Appearances

Quantum Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner I

Angel takes control of the Dissemination Machine to summon the Tribe leaders to Sahasrara after the Embryon defeat Harley Q.. Once the leaders are gathered, Angel explains that they are responsible for releasing Atma upon the Junkyard, and that the power cannot be removed. They also explain that bringing Sera to the top of the Temple is now an additional requirement for victory in the war, but only gives a physical description. Serph asks for more information, but Angel, upon seeing Serph, becomes unintelligible. Shortly after, they run out of time to speak and disappear.

Angel later speaks to Varin Omega directly, alongside a mysterious man in Church attire, calling him Colonel William van Beck. They say that their ability to communicate was restricted by the presence of the other Asura and their inability to use the Technoshaman.

Quantum Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner II

Angel appears once the gate atop Sahasrara opens for Shin Minase and Sera. They explain that, despite using the power of several supercomputers and the EGG itself, the gate can only be left open for three minutes. Once the Embryon arrive at the top, Serph as Varuna attacks Shin, but his attack is deflected. His arm blade breaks, striking the gate as it flies through the air. Angel feels pain at this, and explains that the backflow of data has damaged most of the supercomputers, reducing the amount of time the gate can remain open to fifteen seconds. Shin takes Sera through the gate with him, ensuring that none of the Embryon can follow, and the gate closes.

Quantum Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner III

As explained by Shin Minase to Kazuki Homura, Angel was born form an incestuous pregnancy in one of many cults dedicated to Cuvier Syndrome, the Sun and God. Due to this and the lack of pre-natal procedures, they were born with XXY chromosomes, which were left untreated, and so they grew up as a complete hermaphrodite, fully developing characteristics of both sexes. They also had the unique ability to receive God's data, which they instinctually radiated from their body as electromagnetic waves, causing Cuvier Syndrome to those around them. Once Angel was found in a room of crystallized bodies, they were taken in and placed in an isolated quarantine room. Margot Cuvier, for the sake of continuing her research and believing they might be able to reverse it, adopted Angel as her own child. Later, it was discovered that Angel had a strange cognitive disorder that only allowed them to perceive things that were rendered into digital data.

Later, Angel suddenly experienced menarche, which made them temporarily go mad. With this event, attributed to hormonal changes disrupting the endocrine system, Angel also lost their connection to God, no longer causing Cuvier Syndrome, and became able to perceive the world like a typical human. They later acquired language with the continued support of Margot Cuvier and was shown to be highly intelligent for someone of their age. Despite this, Angel was incapable of describing their prior state in a human language, and entered a panicked state when trying to do so. Despite this, from their testimony, researchers were able to hypothesize that God was an extra-dimensional being connected to this world via the Sun. At eighteen years of age, Angel offered their reproductive organs for the creation of another being who could commune with Him, becoming sexless in the process due to developing an aversion to existing as a sexual being. After multiple failed attempts, only one female individual — S-09F, later known as Seraphita — was created successfully.

Once Colonel William van Beck, Margot Cuvier and Angel arrive to the EGG for Sera's communion with God, Shin Minase explains to Kazuki Homura that the military had an interest in Angel due to the power that deliberate affliction of Cuvier Syndrome could bring, but since Angel became a normal human, their attention was turned to Seraphita and God instead. Angel detects that she is moving through the distortions in spacetime she leaves behind, but cannot determine her exact location. Shin politely asks for Seraphita to arrive, so she appears in the couch. Angel approaches Kazuki, who is leaning against the glass, and explained to him that they have no choice but to use Cielo Alondra for the experiment. When Seraphita begins receiving God's data, Angel is the only one to be unfazed.

Angel, alongside Cuvier and van Beck, are summoned to the EGG by Shin to see the simulations Seraphita began carrying out after the experiment. Once shown a battlefield simulation and told of the possibility of implementing a training environment for any desired skill set, the Colonel is satisfied with the results and leaves. Angel and Cuvier see through and are amused at Shin's scheme to give the military reasons to continue funding the EGG, but their conversation is interrupted by the breakout of Henry Marcus. Angel notes that the AIs created in Seraphita's worlds are different from their real counterparts' personalities, but Shin deflects, saying that she based their personalities on media. Shin leaves, and Angel asks Cuvier whether they should track him, to which she says no.

Angel, Cuvier and van Beck are present when Shin is expositing the Junkyard to them. Angel's prodding causes the Colonel to slip, revealing that the military are already producing Junkyard AI-compatible physical bodies. The Colonel leaves the room after revealing more information to them, displeased, and Angel remarks that he is too incompetent to understand the Technoshaman project. Angel and Cuvier leave the EGG with a sizeable platoon, avoiding its destruction by Henry Marcus's attack.

Quantum Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner IV

Once the Embryon Asuras emerge into their bodies, Gale is held by an information barrier and contacted by Angel to convince him to join the Karma Society. Angel explains the circumstances of his creation, the nature of his body and other requested information. Gale refuses to join the Karma Society, as the meaning of his existence is to obey his leader, Serph, and he deduces from the fact that he had to be contained that Serph has also materialized like himself. Angel snaps, saying that he should accept his role to serve mankind as a new reason to live, and that the lack of a leader unit will cause a logical collapse in him. Gale then asks Angel if they understand what it means to live, to which Angel simply disappears, shaken.

Following Gale's escape with the Embryon, Angel reports to Margot Cuvier information regarding the Asuras and Sera, saying that beings with such power must be captured, to which Cuvier agrees. Angel then asks Cuvier what would she do if the Atmas' need for authentic human protein were never overcome. Cuvier says that she is planning and experimenting for such an eventuality. Shin Minase enters the room, explaining that the Embryon have been tracked to the Lokapala's hideout, and asks permission to begin an assault on the location, which is granted. Angel, however, sees through his intentions of destroying the Asura himself out of hatred, especially for Serph.

After the attack on the Lokapala by Shin Minase as Ardha fails, Angel ponders Gale's words to them while watching a comatose Sera. Angel understands that the only thing that matters to them is to return to their former transcendent state, and that they were furious at Sera for being able to commune with God. But in this, they did not understand life itself, as their sole purpose, as dictated by Cuvier, was to serve humanity. Their thoughts were interrupted by a quake caused by Ardha's attacks as Shin Minase decided to betray the Karma Society for the purpose of killing Sera and the Asuras himself. Angel orders increased security around Sera's chamber and leaves to report the situation to Cuvier. Angel and Cuvier later enter Sera's chamber themselves and establish an information barrier to stop Ardha from entering. Serph reaches their location, wounded by Ardha's presence. Cuvier tries to convince Serph to join the Karma Society, but he refuses, forcing her and Angel to escape the room. Inside their escape capsule, Angel and Cuvier discuss their plans. With the expected loss of the Asuras and Sera. Cuvier says that the only path forward for humanity is to turn them all into demons and secretly feed them human protein, which shakes Angel and brings Gale's words to their mind again.

Quantum Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner V

Angel, upon learning that Great Karma City was destroyed, enters Margot Cuvier's office to deliver the news, though Cuvier says she is already aware of it. Angel becomes unnerved and agitated at Cuvier's apathy towards the situation, and while Cuvier is explaining how they will connect Sera to God, Angel shoots Cuvier with a pistol. Cuvier infers that they are envious of Sera, since she will be serving God instead of them. Cuvier, in her last moments, explains that her true plan was to wage war on humanity to filter out those who were best suited for continuing the species. After Cuvier dies, Angel reveals a secret compartment in her desk containing the chip for the Atma Lucifer, ignoring the men running in the room behind them. Before they use the chip, Angel recalls their conversation with Gale, finally having an answer for his question: the meaning of life is to live it.

Lucifer transforms Angel into a huge egg-shaped creature covered in wings, and whose feathers become winged child heads, as Lucifer reflects the user's desires. Lucifer has the ability to gather data and send it to God with the goal of dragging Him down to their dimension, which would inadvertently destroy the universe, replacing the gathered data with the Latin word "Sanctus". The Embryon's attacks are initially ineffective and reflected back to them, so Gale develops a plan to use the data he gathered while initially communicating with Angel as a disguise to approach its humanoid core. He succeeds, grasping the core with his hand and giving Serph, as Vishnu, the opening to cut Lucifer into pieces. Gale, reverted to human form, holds Angel's head in his hand before it, along the rest of Lucifer's bodies, turn to dust. Later, moments before the Embryon's plan to teach God the language of human emotion, Gale hears what he believes is Angel in the wind, crying. He asks them to accompany him and see the world Sera sought to protect, saying that he relates to Angel's loneliness.

In the future, once humanity establishes themselves on the world again, a vendor is approached by a hooded man with blue eyes and his partner. The man picks a bangle representing the Sun God and clasps it on his partner's arm, to their surprise. The vendor turns away, hoping to also sell them earrings complimenting the man's eyes, but they disappear in a gust of wind, leaving behind an old metal coin, shocking the vendor.

Trivia
