Baihu, also known as Byakko in some localizations,[a] is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Mural of Baihu made during the Asuka period of Japan.

Origin

Baihu,[b] or the White Tiger, is one of the Four Symbols.[c] It is mentioned in the Confucian I Ching,[d] as well as Daoist texts regarding the Five Elements. In these texts, Baihu represents the west, autumn, and metal. It is also the constellation associated with the the White Emperor,[e] one of the Five Regions' Highest Deities[f] and a manifestation of Shangdi. It is therefore associated with the planet Venus, and has an animal equivalent in Bailong.

As a constellation, Baihu has seven "Mansions," or moon positions that form it. These include Eta Andromedae, its legs; Beta Arietis, its bond; 35 Arietis, its stomach; Alcyone, its hairy head; Ain, its net; Meissa, its turtle beak; and Alnitak, its three stars.

In Records of the Grand Historian, Ying Huhai,[g] the Second Emperor of Qin[h] after Qin Shi Huang,[i] dreamt of Baihu biting and killing the left course of his carriage. Said dream gave him great mental unrest, making him see a dream interpreter (占梦 zhānmèng), a sort of diviner, for support. They advised him that an evil influence from the River Jing[j] was at work, prompting him to purify himself in Wangyi Palace[k] and sacrificed four horses His reliance on advisors, especially the corrupt Zhao Gao,[l] eventually caused his people to call him weak, revolt, and ultimately collapse of the entire Qin dynasty.[1] The belief held by Emperor Ying, in this regard, could have arose from Baihu being associated with war, punishment, and death; this can be attributed to its metal element (weaponry) and autumn season (death of flora and fauna, executions).

Being part of the Four Symbols, Baihu is grouped with Zhuque, Xuanwu, and Qinglong.[2]

Design

Baihu is a white tiger with long locks of white fur on its face, chest, legs and tail tip. It typically appears with bright blue eyes, a visible spine and a long thin tail.
