Origin

First known from Pliny the Elder's Natural History, Roman sources claimed that the catoblepas was a sluggish, bull-like beast with a heavy head that always hung towards the ground. Pliny says the catoblepas lives near the source of the Nile, the Nigris spring in western Aethiopia, and he says that anyone who meets the catoblepas's gaze will die on the spot. Aelian places the κατώβλεπον katṓblepon in Libya, and he says that it has toxic breath rather than a deadly gaze. He derives the creature's name from the Greek verb κατωβλέπω katōblépō ("I look downward"), owing to its low-hanging head.

Kētai Akuma Densho	西エチオピア付近に生息すると言われる妖獣。その視線を見てしまったものは死に至るとされる。 出身地：エチオピア カトブレパスは、古代ローマの将軍であり作家でもあるプリニウスの「博物誌」において、西エチオピアに棲むと記述されている怪物で、普段閉じているその目を見たものは死に至るとされ、恐れられたと言う。黒いバッファローに似た体と、ブタのような頭をしており、頭部と体は細長くたるんだ区部でつながれ、すごい量のたてがみが頭部から生えた姿をしていると言われる。毒の息を吐きかけて枯らせた地面の草を食べ、普段は横たわったまま動かないとされる。 Translation:
