In Shin Megami Tensei, the moon phase affects how much damage demons deal along with negotiation; demons will refuse to negotiate on a full moon. The exact damage multiplier for each phase differs depending on the demon, and many demons are not affected by the moon phases at all (type 0). There are 15 moon phase types.[2]

In Nocturne, moon phases are called "Kagutsuchi" phases and are connected to the titular force in the story but function the same way. The phases determine what is found in chests. There are abilities such as "Bright Might" that guarantee a critical hit on certain phases. Kagutsuchi phases also influence demon negotiation: when the moon is full, demons are addled by the power of Kagutsuchi and are unable to talk.
Certain demons, such as the Fiends, can only be fused during certain Kagutsuchi phases.
In Apocalypse, the moon phases serve as a countdown until the Divine Powers' plan to create the Cosmic Egg through Shesha and form a new universe is fulfilled, starting from a new moon and going to the next full moon. Unlike in other games, it does not affect gameplay like negotiation.
In Last Bible Special, the moon phase affects whether or not a Beast can negotiate, as well as the strength of the skill Moonlight. The phase can be inverted using the skill Muntenhan. The moon phase changes every 16 steps and resets to a new moon every 255 steps.

The exact multiplier for each phase differs depending on the demon, and many demons are not affected by the moon phases at all (type I). These lettered designations are from the PSP guidebook; the Saturn version's Official Guidebook Final uses numbered designations and they are ordered differently.

Moon Phases change day by day and affect major story events. At a full moon the party goes through a scripted event against a shadow representing one of the arcana. After the full moon is over a new set of floors in Tartarus became available. If S.E.E.S. clears those floors they eventually hit a magical barrier that prevents further passage. This barrier only goes away on the next full moon.

The Digital Devil Saga games rename the moon phase system to the "Solar Noise" system but it works similarly. Various skills rely on the specific phase. The phases impact which items you find in chests. Solar Noise phase affects how much you can sell items for, Max Noise raises prices highest while min is lowest, with the exception of the "Jack Cell" item which is the opposite.
