Origin

Shesha is a king of the nāgas in Hinduism, especially prominent in Vaishnavite traditions. He is closely associated with Vishnu. Vishnu is often depicted as resting upon Shesha, who floats in the primordial waters. Shesha has accompanied avatars of Vishnu, for example incarnating as Lakshmana brother of Rama, and as Balarama brother of Krishna.
