Kagutsuchi is a Demon in Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne. It is a force that oversees The Conception and whose power is needed to create the new world.

Kagutsuchi is the creator of the Vortex World, brought into being when the conception occurs. It resides at the very center of the Vortex World, and exists to perpetuate a cycle of death and rebirth where, when presented with a Reason developed by a human, it will empower them to recreate the world according to the vision of said Reason. Kagutsuchi also has phases, which affect a demon's behavior and the process of fusion.
After the conception occurs, a vision of Kagutsuchi appears to the Protagonist, where it attempts to read his heart before discovering that he has no ideals of his own within it. Finding this unacceptable, it orders him to go out and discover himself. The other humans that survived the conception are later said to have also witnessed a vision from Kagutsuchi imploring them to develop their reasons.

Towards the end of the game, when the Demi-fiend revisits the Amala Temple to place the Yahirono Himorogi into a column there, an explosion of magatsuhi bursts forth, with the scene then cutting to the Obelisk being struck into the earth by another tower, which is revealed to be the Tower of Kagutsuchi. This tower leads all the way up to Kagutsuchi itself, and so becomes the final destination for all who wish to bring their ideal world to fruition. Upon entering the tower, Kagutsuchi once again reads the Demi-fiend's heart, and depending on his chosen path, will show either approval or disapproval at what it finds.
Once the Demi-fiend collects all three stones of treasure, he is allowed to ascend to the very top of the tower to seek an audience with Kagutsuchi, whose reaction to him varies by route. If the Demi-fiend comes forward to it bearing a chosen reason, then Kagutsuchi will accept him and test his strength in battle to determine if he is worthy of creating a new world. Once defeated, it warns him that his true battle still awaits, as creation is a battle without an enemy, before it crumbles away and bursts its light across the Vortex World to make way for the new world. If the Demi-fiend is on the Neutral route however, Kagutsuchi will be angered and bewildered that he is the one who is standing before it. It refuses to accept the idea of a world with no set path, claiming that though freedom was given to the world by the Great Will, such ideals of freedom only lead to ruin and destruction. Viewing the Demi-fiend as a slave to freedom just like a certain fallen angel, Kagutsuchi succumbs to its anger and attempts to kill him. Once defeated however, it remarks that the world he wishes to create will promise nothing but suffering, and then crumbles away, engulfing the Vortex World in it's light and returning the world to how it was before the Conception occurred.
On the Chaos route, Kagutsuchi is similarly bewildered by the Demi-fiend's presence, but says that now that he has killed all the remaining humans, there is no chance left for a new world to be created. Kagutsuchi notes in disgust that despite all his strength, the Demi-fiend's soul is empty and has caused the death of the world, and so he curses him for eternity and vanishes from the Vortex World entirely, leaving it enshrouded in darkness.
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax
In the Maniax version of the game, the Demi-fiend is informed by the Old Man in a Wheelchair's servant, the Lady in Black, of the eternal cycle of the conception, and how a Kagutsuchi is present in countless other worlds to perpetuate this cycle.
If the Demi-fiend chooses to follow the path of destruction, Kagutsuchi will be enraged with Demi-fiend's choice to forsake both his humanity and the possibility of creation in favor of joining Lucifer's cause. Overwhelmed with righteous anger, it attacks him, but as it dies, it swears that Demi-fiend will not escape from the fire of judgement and spitefully curses him for all eternity. It then crumbles away and bursts light all across the vortex world, permanently destroying the world and eliminating any chance of creation happening.
