This is a list of explicit or confirmed inspirations and references in designs from the Megami Tensei franchise.
Shin Megami Tensei series
Shin Megami Tensei
- Michael's design is a reference to the statue St Michael's Victory over the Devil held at the Coventry Cathedral.
- Asura's design is a reference to the Asura sculpture held by the Kōfuku-ji temple, which is considered a National Treasure by the Japanese government.
- The demon Amon's appearance in the Mega-CD version is a reference to the character from the titular manga Devilman, who was created by a fusion with the same demon.
Shin Megami Tensei II
- The demon Amon's appearance in the Game Boy Advance version is a reference to the character from the titular manga Devilman, who was created by a fusion with the same demon.
Shin Megami Tensei if...
- Akira Miyamoto and Amon are a reference to the characters Akira Fudo and Amon from Devilman, who fuse together to become the "Devilman".[1]
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux
- The appearance of Amon's arms are a homage to the demon's design in Shin Megami Tensei if... which featured a reference to an unspecified work.[2] This is likely a reference to the character from the titular manga Devilman, who was created by a fusion with the same demon and a boy named Akira Fudo. Notably, Amon's ally in Shin Megami Tensei if..., Akira Miyamoto, was confirmed to have been inspired by Devilman by writer Ryūtarō Itō.[1]
Devil Summoner series
Persona series
Persona 4
- Tomoe's yellow jumpsuit is a reference to the outfit worn by martial artist Bruce Lee in Game of Death. One of Chie's victory lines is also a reference to Bruce Lee quote, "Don't think. Feel."
- The Envious Giant is modeled after Tokyo Tower.
- As discussed in episode 12 of the Persona Stalker Club, parts of Tohru Adachi's character were inspired by the main character of the Japanese detective drama, Bayside Shakedown. The main character, Aoshima, is a detective in a green mods coat and red tie who works on Odaiba and has a model gun collection. Adachi is a detective in a red tie and yellow mods coat who used to work in Iwatodai (which is partially based on Odaiba) and also collects model guns.
Persona 4 Golden
- The Heaven's Giant is modeled after Tokyo Skytree.

His surname, Miyamoto, was chosen in a really simple association of ideas: Akira and Amon combine in the manga and if we say Amon, then it’s got to be Miyamoto."
