Profile

Origin

Ammut, also spelled Ammit or Ahemait, is an ancient Egyptian goddess who plays a part in the judgement of the dead. According to chapter 125 of Book of the Dead, Ammut devours hearts heavy with sin on the scales. This prevents the deceased individual from passing into Aaru, condemning them to eternity in Duat, the world of the dead. She is depicted as a quadruped, possessing the head of a crocodile, the upper body of a lion, and the lower body of a hippopotamus.

In Egyptian, her name ꜥm-mwt means "she who devours the dead."

Design

Ammut's default depiction in the series is that of a red-eyed crocodile with the front legs of a lion and the hind legs of a hippopotamus. She stands upright with her mouth open to the sky, held in place by metal chains connecting to a collar around her neck.

In Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner, Ammut is light brown with an olive green belly, gold front legs and dark brown back legs. The chains around her neck are dark gray. In Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, Ammut's body is black, her belly is orange-brown, and the chains at her neck are gray; this version of Ammut is the one used throughout the series at large.
