Profile

Origin

The White Hare of Inaba and Ōnamuchi-no-kami at Hakuto Shrine in Tottori

The White Hare of Inaba is a figure from Japanese mythology associated with the ancient province of Inaba, now eastern Tottori Prefecture. The legend forms part of the Izumo denrai, or mythological tradition originating from the Izumo region and appears in the Kojiki (712 CE), where it is closely connected to the kami Ōnamuchi-no-kami, later known as Ōkuninushi.

In the Kojiki account, the hare deceives a group of wanizame (crocodile or shark-like creatures) into forming a bridge so it may cross from the Oki Islands to the mainland. After revealing the trick, it is attacked and stripped of its fur. When Ōnamuchi and his eighty brothers encounter the flayed hare, the brothers mock it and give harmful advice, telling it to wash in the sea and dry itself in the wind, which only increases its suffering. In contrast, Ōnamuchi instructs it to wash in fresh water and roll in cattail pollen, which heals its wounds. In gratitude, the hare reveals itself as a deity and prophesies that Ōnamuchi, rather than his brothers, will win the hand of Princess Yakami-hime. The legend emphasizes Ōnamuchi’s benevolence and wisdom and serves as an early demonstration of his divine favor.

A separate regional tradition associates the white hare with the sun goddess Amaterasu, guiding her to a suitable site for a temporary palace along Nakayama and Reiseki mountains. Accompanied by the hare, Amaterasu reaches a mountaintop plain now known as Ise ga naru, where the hare subsequently disappears. Shrines in Tottori Prefecture, including Hakuto Shrine, venerate the hare as a sacred figure.
