Hresvelgr is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Hresvelgr (Old Norse: Hræsvelgr) is a jötunn in the shape of an eagle, only ever mentioned in one verse in the Vafþrúðnismál in the Poetic Edda, and which is paraphrased by Snorri Sturluson in the Prose Edda. The name is commonly understood to mean “corpse-swallower”, although in the essay Hraesvelgr, the Wind-Giant, Reinterpreted, Jón Hnefill Aðalsteinsson claims it could mean “shipwreck-current”.

In the verse mentioning him it is said he sits at the end of the skies and that the wind comes from his wings. Hresvelgr is not mentioned in any other source.

In modern times, Hresvelgr has often been conflated with the unnamed eagle that sits at the top of Yggdrasil and who is enemies with Nidhoggr despite there being no connection between the two in ancient sources. The only apparent similarity between the two is them both being eagles, although Hresvelgr is a jötunn and the unnamed eagle is not.

Design

In both his Shin Megami Tensei and Last Bible Special designs Hresvelgr is depicted as a white eagle, with the artwork for Shin Megami Tensei having bright blue eyes and a yellow beak and claws.

In Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, ethereal and agonized human faces can be seen on the inside of his wings, likely a reference to the common etymology of his name.

Shin Megami Tensei (A-Mode DDS)	Origin: Scandinavia A giant eagle that dwells in Yggdrasil. His name means "corpse swallower," and he devours the dead to carry their souls. He also flaps his wings to cause all the winds in the world. He's said to be descended from giants and can see the world from his high perch. He is the rival of Nidhoggr, and the two of them will fight even after Ragnarok.
Shin Megami Tensei IV	A giant eagle that sits at the very top of Yggdrasil. The winds blow whenever it beats its wings. It is forever at war with the snake Nidhoggr, which lives at the tree's root.
