Treasure Demons are a recurring type of Shadow in the Persona series.

Profile

Treasure Demons were introduced in Persona 5. They are a rare type of Shadow that can be encountered in the Metaverse. They may appear on their own in the overworld (where they appear as a floating magenta gem), when destroying a Search Object or opening a Treasure Chest, and in certain encounters which have a low set chance to replace a different Shadow with a Treasure Demon. While they can be recruited as Personas, they cannot be equipped and serve only as powerful material for fusion or strengthening of other Personas.

Treasure Demons are based on various famous valuable items which generally have myths and legends surrounding them. They appear as thin, flailing ghosts emerging from these items. However, in Persona 5 Strikers all Treasure Demons are identical, using the overworld gem model as a base, and have names relating to the Jail they are found in.

Gameplay

Persona 5

Treasure Demons make their first appearance in this game and are introduced through a story event in the second dungeon, Madarame's Palace. They can then appear in Palaces as well as Mementos, with each Treasure Demon generally corresponding to a respective Palace and area of Mementos (sometimes two).

In battle, Treasure Demons do not act and will spend their turn "groaning", but if they are not defeated after several turns they may run away. With a successful Hold Up, the only Negotiation outcome is to automatically recruit the Treasure Demon as a Persona (if the protagonist already has that Treasure Demon in stock, it will refuse to join). They have no item drops but give high amounts of money compared to other Shadows.

Recruiting Treasure Demons is the only way to obtain them as Personas, since they cannot be created through fusion. As Personas, Treasure Demons cannot be equipped or used in battle, nor can they learn skills or gain experience, but they can be used in special ways in the Velvet Room. Each Treasure Demon has a set of eight skills of the same type (e.g. elemental attacks, buffs and debuffs, passives) that can be passed down through fusion or the Gallows. Strengthening a Persona with a Treasure Demon in the Gallows grants a 3x multiplier, and a 5x multiplier if they are of the same Arcana. When itemized with the Electric Chair, they also provide a unique Accessory with the same name as that Treasure Demon.

Treasure Demons have unique interactions with the fusion system based on the Compendium's sorting by Arcana. They can only be used in fusions with one other Persona, and will produce another Persona of that Persona's Arcana that will either be one or two "ranks" up or down depending on the Treasure Demon and second Persona's Arcana. Since the order within an Arcana is based on highest-to-lowest level, the level of the second Persona may affect its "rank" and thus the resulting fusion. Personas that can only be fused from three or more Personas or otherwise have special fusion conditions will be skipped over. The following table details the result from fusing each Treasure Demon and Arcana:[1]

Persona 5 Royal

Treasure Demons function much the same as in the original version of the game, but also have new features due to Royal's added mechanics. A new Treasure Demon, Orichalcum, is added for the Final Palace. The new Path of Da'at are of Mementos features those found in the Depths of Mementos, but Regent can also appear despite being a much lower level than the other enemies encountered there.

In the Velvet Room, Treasure Demons itemized during a Fusion Alarm become an upgraded version of their accessory, and when used to strengthen another Persona during an alarm, they will grant a 5x EXP multiplier to Personas of a different Arcana and 7x to those of the same one.

With the addition of Traits, Treasure Demon have a unique type called Ultimate Vessel, which allows the selection of multiple traits when using the Treasure Demon in a fusion. These traits depend on the Treasure Demon:

Persona 5 Strikers

In Persona 5 Strikers, Treasure Demons are introduced in a tutorial in the Sendai Jail, though they can subsequently still appear in the previous Shibuya Jail. Each Jail has its own Treasure Demon with a different weakness, but they are all visually identical. They are more likely to spawn when the Security Meter is higher, and the appearance rate can also be increased with the "Treasure Hunter" BOND skill. When attacked, a timer of 30 seconds begins for the Phantom Thieves to defeat the Treasure Demon. Treasure Demons have a unique pool of possible Skill Cards to drop in each Jail; in Merciless mode, this pool becomes the default for other enemies, and Treasure Demons drop even rarer cards of more powerful skills regardless of the Jail, many of which are unique to these drops.

Persona 5: The Phantom X

Treasure Demons reappear and function the same in battle as Persona 5, but rather than being recruited as Personas, upon defeat they are obtained as special items. Treasure Demons are able to be used in the Velvet Room to overclock Personas in lieu of that Persona's Seal, with higher-ranking Personas requiring higher-level Treasure Demons. Treasure Demons are also occasionally available as rewards for events or goals.
