Origin

The Stone of Scone within the Coronation Chair at Westminster Abbey (ca. 1875-ca. 1885)

The Stone of Scone is a block of red sandstone quarried from Scone, Perthshire. It gets its name from the Augustinian Scone Abbey on Moot Hill, which has since been destroyed.

The Stone of Scone was used in the coronation of Scottish kings until 1296, when it was seized by the English under King Edward I and brought to Westminster Abbey, after which it was used in the coronation ceremonies of English (later British) monarchs. Traditionally, monarchs would sit on the stone, before it was embedded into the Coronation Chair itself with a wooden platform in the 17th century. It was broken in half in 1914 by a Suffragette bombing. The stone was returned to Scotland in 1996, and is normally located in Edinburgh Castle; as of 2024, it is on display in Perth.
