Profile
Origin
Konohana Sakuya, fully named as Konohanasakuya-hime, is a goddess in Japanese mythology and daughter of Ōyamatsumi renowned as the Blossom Princess. She is the goddess of Mount Fuji and all volcanoes, as well as goddess of cherry blossoms.
The God Oyamatsumi had two daughters: Konohanasakuya-hime whose name refers to blossoms, and the disfigured-looking Iwanaga-hime whose name refers to having rock solid longevity. Ninigi-no-Mikoto, great-grandfather of Japan's first Emperor Jimmu, asked for Konohanasakuya's hand in marriage. Oyamatsumi allowed him to marry both Konohanasakuya and Iwanaga, but Ninigi rejected Iwanaga because of her looks. This was Oyamatsumi's test to Ninigi: If he had taken Iwanaga as his wife as well, then Ninigi's descendants—the Imperial line of Japan—would have long and enduring lifespans comparable to that of a rock. But because he picked only Konohanasakuya, Ninigi fated the Imperial line to having short, transient, fleeting lives that come and go like a cherry blossom.[1] Konohanasakuya is also associated with safe childbirth. Ninigi suspected that their children were not his based on how quickly she became pregnant, and he lit the maternity hut on fire to test if they were truly his or not. Following this association of safe childbirth through fire, she also became a deity associated with protecting people from the fires of Mt. Fuji and she is now enshrined in the area.[2][3]

One of the Kunitsukami in Japanese mythology. Daughter of Oyamatsumi. Younger sister of Iwanaga-hime. Her name means "a woman who blooms and flourishes like a cherry blossom." She is considered one of the most beautiful of Japan's myriad gods. She fell in love with Ninigi of the Amatsukami and became his wife. After she became pregnant in just one night, he questioned whether the child was truly his, and therefore godly. As proof that the child was of the Amatsukami, she barricaded herself in a birthing-house and set it on fire, then successfully gave birth. Originally, she is said to have been a god who governed water. However, this legacy of giving birth in a fire earned her regard as the goddess of volcanoes, and she is identified with the volcano spirit Asama no Okami. |
Game Appearances
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
Konohana Sakuya appears in the DLC "Sakura Cinders of the East". She appears in Minato seeking out Susano-o in hopes he can bring peace to the world after the battles between Law and Chaos devastated the land.[4] Upon encountering the Nahobino, she senses a power similar to Susano-o within him, though she doubts he has the potential to be the hero she has been looking for. As a test she requests that he defeats her father Oyamatsumi, and when the Nahobino succeeds she challenges him to battle so she can see the extent of his power for herself. When she is bested, she praises the Nahobino's power, recalling that Izanagi divided his power into three parts that were then used to create Proto-fiends and recognises that as the source of the Nahobino's power.[5] Satisfied that she has found a hero connected to Susano-o, she joins the Nahobino's party.
