The hannya^[a] is a mask used in Noh theater that is typically used to represent a female demon or oni. The origin of the mask's name is said to come from either a monk who was from Nara Hannya-bō, or a Buddhist term for wisdom.^[1]

Nomenclature

般若 Hannya derives from the Sanskrit प्रज्ञा prajñā ("wisdom") through a Chinese intermediate.

Hanja's official profile from Megami Tensei II no Subete claims the name Hanja comes from 半邪 hanja, meaning "half-evil", or 半蛇 hanja, meaning "half-snake".^[2] However, its description otherwise matches Hannya. The form "Hanja" may have been in error.
