Origin

Yomotsu-Shikome (黄泉醜女[a], 予母都志許売 in the Kojiki), translated by Basil Hall Chamberlain as "Ugly-Female-of-Hades", are female demons from the land of Yomi which appear in the Kamitsumaki of the Kojiki. The section of the Kamitsumaki in question chronicles Izanagi finding Izanami in Yomi and fleeing upon seeing her decayed form. Mortified, Izanami sends Yomotsu-Shikome to chase after him. To throw off the Yomotsu-Shikome, Izanagi casts his black hair vines[b] down, which sprout grapes. This slows the Yomotsu-Shikome down momentarily as they eat the grapes. When they continue chasing Izanagi, he casts his comb down, which turns into bamboo sprouts. Finally, the Yomotsu-Shikome stop in order to eat the bamboo sprouts.

When the Yomotsu-Shikome are stopped, Izanami sends the Yakusa-no-Ikazuchi and 1,500 Yomotsu-Ikusa to chase him.[1]

Design

According to Aya Nishitani, Yomotsu-Shikome is described as being frog-like in his novel because he encountered a frog when visiting a tomb said to be the tomb of Yamatohime; this tomb visit inspired his book's depiction of the tomb of Izanami.[2]
