In the early 14th century, the Knights' Templar were accused of worshiping "Baphomet," which is a corrupted form of the name of Muhammad, the Islamic prophet. In the 19th century, Baphomet was reinterpreted by occultist Éliphas Lévi as a goat-headed entity representing balance. Aleister Crowley further developed the idea of Baphomet into being an emblem of his idea of Satan.
