Persona 3 Portable, originally released outside of Japan as Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable, is a 2010 enhanced edition of the 2006 role-playing game Persona 3, the fourth entry in the Persona series.

Portable features a number of changes and new content additions, most notably the option of playing as a female protagonist, though lacks The Answer epilogue previously included in Persona 3 FES. Because of hardware limitations of the PSP, the game is presented in a Visual Novel style outside of dungeons.

On January 19, 2023, Persona 3 Portable was re-released multiplatform worldwide with upscaled character portraits and some quality of life changes.

There is a hidden hour that exists between one day and the next when terrible creatures known as Shadows roam. You must wield your inner power–Persona–to protect humanity and find a way to bring an end to this threat.

Experience the iconic, critically acclaimed RPG that reinvented the Persona series, Persona 3 Portable, now newly remastered for modern platforms.

Shortly after transferring to Gekkoukan High School, the protagonist encounters the "Dark Hour." Unfamiliar stillness swallows the city, people turn into eerie coffins, and otherworldly monsters called Shadows swarm. When they are attacked by one of these Shadows, and all hope seems lost, the power of the heart, their Persona is awakened.

Gameplay Changes

  • Removed The Answer that was featured in Persona 3 FES.
  • Added the option to choose to play as a Female Protagonist. She has a different set of social links and certain characters interact with her differently. This includes social links for the male party members, who are now romanceable. She can start Fuuka and Yukari's social links without needing to raise any stats. She can choose Theodore as a velvet room attendant. Her UI is pink rather than blue. She has a new alternate soundtrack of her own, which was compiled in the Persona 3 Portable Original Soundtrack
  • Unlike the other versions of Persona 3, Persona 3 Portable is in Visual Novel style, meaning that character models are mostly only used in dungeons.
  • Animated cutscenes are gone, certain specific animated cutscenes are now replaced with scenes using in game models, with dynamic camera angles
  • The game has a new opening theme, Soul Phrase
  • Like in Persona 4, the player can take jobs at various establishments to make money. These jobs also raise help raise Social Stats
  • Two new difficulty settings are added, the easiest setting, Beginner and A new hardest difficulty setting, Maniac
  • In Tartarus, HP and SP is no longer automatically restored after returning to the first floor. Instead, the player must interact with the clock and spend money.
  • The fatigue system has been reworked, party members do not become tired inside the dungeon, only after leaving a dungeon, or returning to the lobby after dying without revival.
  • A new tactic allowing direct control of party members is now an option, but some other tactics were removed.
  • Like in Persona 4, Characters can now "Defend" against attacks, instead of just standing by. Other party members can also jump in to take the damage from an attack that would've killed the protagonist
  • The protagonist can no longer equip any weapon. The male protagonist uses one handed swords, the female protagonist uses naginatas.
  • Mitsuru's weapon type has been changed to a new category "Rapier" to accommodate the protagonist taking her weapon type
  • The Hall of Doors, which was in the answer, is now accessible as an optional dungeon accessible from the Tartarus lobby in January. It contains more powerful versions of the game's main bosses.
  • Some characters throughout the game will become missing persons that must be found and rescued in Tartarus or they will die. This includes social link characters
  • This game introduces the Skill Card system. Raising a persona to a certain level will grant you a skill card that can be used to teach it's associated skill to any persona
  • Follow-up attacks are added.
  • The One More and Knock Down mechanics were reworked to match Persona 4.

2023 Re-release

On January 19th, 2023, Persona 3 Portable was re-released onto the Nintendo Switch, Microsoft, PlayStation Network, and Steam storefronts as a new HD remaster, following a June 2022 announcement as part of the series 25th anniversary. As part of the re-release, new features added were:

  • A boost to the framerate, with 30FPS, 60FPS, and 120 FPS being options on PC, with consoles locked to 60FPS.
  • Dual Audio support
  • New localizations for Italian, French, German, Spanish and Simplified Chinese.
  • AI upscaled backgrounds, as well as a mix of hand-done upscaling for character renders and models.
  • Difficulty customization brought over from Persona 4 Golden, as well as the new feature to change the difficulty from the menu at any time.
  • Achievements were added, most based on the ones from Persona 4 Golden.
  • Plumes of Dusk are removed; party members can now be resurrected from the beginning of a floor or following a game over in battle.
  • A Quick Save feature was added, allowing one to save where they are in the game no matter what. Doing this exits the game to the title screen.
  • Changing the language of the game will default the male protagonist's name to "Makoto Yuki" and the female protagonist to "Kotone Shiomi" respectively.

Development

When developing the female protagonist's route, the developers took into account the male player experience such as not wanting to make the pink UI too embarrassing for men[1] and allowing her Social Links to have a choice between platonic and romantic routes as they were told that men would find it off-putting if they all ended in romance like with the male protagonist.[2] Katsura Hashino acknowledged that male players might have mixed feelings about playing as a high school girl, and admitted that he himself felt embarrassed doing Social Links such as Akihiko's that made him feel like he was discovering a new, sweeter side to an old friend.[2]
