Origin
Yamato Takeru is a semi-legendary prince and folk hero in Japanese mythology and the son of Emperor Keikō. Originally named Prince Ousu, his story is principally recorded in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, which differ in several details. In the Kojiki, Ousu was ordered by Emperor Keikō to admonish his elder brother, Ōusu, for failing to attend the emperor's meals. Ousu instead ambushed and killed him, tearing his body apart and disposing of it. Alarmed by Ousu's violent nature, Keikō sent him to subdue the Kumaso in western Japan. Ousu infiltrated a gathering of the Kumaso leaders while disguised as a woman and killed the elder leader. As the younger leader lay dying, he praised Ousu's bravery and gave him the name Yamato Takeru, meaning "Yamato Brave." Ousu was later sent to Izumo, where he defeated the local leader through trickery.
The Nihon Shoki does not include the story of Ousu killing his elder brother. Instead, Emperor Keikō sends Ousu to subdue the Kumaso after they rebelled against the imperial court. The Kumaso account also differs from the Kojiki, with Kawakami no Takeru serving as the principal Kumaso leader.
Keikō later sent Yamato Takeru to subdue rebellious peoples and hostile kami in eastern Japan. Before his journey, his aunt Yamato-Hime, a priestess of Amaterasu at Ise, gave him the sacred sword Ame-no-Murakumo, which had been discovered within the body of Yamata-no-Orochi by Susano-o. During his journey, Takeru used the sword to escape an attempt to burn him alive in a field, after which he renamed it Kusanagi no Tsurugi, meaning "Grass-Cutting Sword." He continued to defeat enemies and hostile kami, but later challenged the kami of Mount Ibuki without the sword and was cursed with illness. Yamato Takeru died from the illness, and according to legend his soul transformed into a great white bird and flew away.

| Shin Megami Tensei IV
|
Yamato-Takeru no Mikoto was one of the greatest warriors of Japanese lore. He was said to be half human, half god.
Around six feet tall with a stern face, he prided himself on his strength. He was ferocious and killed his older brother in a trivial argument. His father, Emperor Keiko feared his son and sent him to war at the western front, and then on an expedition to the east after his successful return. On his way east, his[sic] met his aunt, who gave him the divine sword Ame no Murakumo no Tsurugi. It is said that when he was attacked by fire at Sagami no Kuni, he cut the grass and was able to escape alive. From this, the Ame no Murakumo also became known as the Kusanagi no Tsurugi (grass-cutter sword). He eventually died of a curse from a god at Mt. Ibuki, but he turned into a great white bird and flew away.
