Origin

The Wendigo[a] is an evil spirit associated with cannibalism in the folklore of the Algonquian peoples, primarily the Ojibwe and Cree cultures, acting as malevolent spirits that possess people and drive them to murder and cannibalism. They are described as appearing emaciated to the point that their bones stick out of their skin and grow in size every time they eat a human so their hunger is never sated, allowing them to grow tall enough to tower over trees. It is considered tabboo to depict or speak about the Wendigo in Algonquian cultures as not to invite its presence.

Design

The Wendigo in Shin Megami Tensei is depicted as a purple skinned humanoid covered with long red hair with only it's face partially visible. It received a new design in Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers that gave it an ape-like body with white fur covering its body with its stomach, chest and face exposed revealing black skin with blue markings on it, and has a pair of giant horns resembling those of a moose sprouting from its head.
