Game Appearances
Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner
The Tag Ring is an accessory given to every resident of the Junkyard. It is considered a necessity, given that it tracks the user's Macca and serves to operate Terminals and the Vendor. Tag Rings are generally worn on the left middle finger, though there are exceptions, such as Cielo wearing his on a necklace and Lupa wearing his on the right index finger, in addition to multiple necklaces adorned with Tag Rings.
Once Lupa allies himself with the Embryon, he gives his Tag Ring to Gale. Later, after he is defeated, Gale wears Lupa's Tag Ring on his left index finger.
Serph can find a Red Ring in Ajna by entering it through the Samsara Tunnels from Anahata, belonging to a deceased woman named Laura. She was the partner of the human whose Atma is Metatron, and bringing the Red Ring to him will cause him to transform into Metatron and attack the Embryon, wrongfully assuming they devoured Laura.
Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2
The Embryon retain their Tag Rings, though they are useless, as they have left the Junkyard. Serph is prompted to sell his to Mad Mart for money prior to entering the Underwater Cable, while the other Embryon keep theirs. Kathy points out that the text "Stage 1" is engraved on the ring.
Novel Appearances
Quantum Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner I
Tag rings are a form of identification issued to all of the Junkyard's Newborns by the Church of the Arbiters of Karma. It serves as a means of identification, which is required for authentication, acquisition of equipment and supplies, and queries to the Church. These functions make tag rings indispensable, which only further confuses the Embryon as to Sera's origins, as she appeared in the Junkyard without any of the equipment and augmentations present even in Newborns.
Quantum Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner II
Lupa provides Canis Volk's tag ring to the Embryon as assurance, having accidentally taken it from his hand while trying to free him from the karmic amalgamation's attack. With the ring in the Embryon's possession, Lupa suggests that they present it to the Church of the Arbiters of Karma as evidence that they have subjugated the Wolves should they believe that Lupa is trying to trap them. Gale identifies it as the genuine article, knowing that replication of a tag ring is effectively impossible, as their method of creation is a secret only known to the Church and tampering would cause one to self-destruct.
Canis Volk's ring is kept in a secret compartment until the Embryon-Maribel-Wolves alliance is officialized. Serph retrieves Volk's ring to give to Lupa, who was established as the provisional leader of the Wolves, to symbolize his position. Lupa is hesitant to accept the ring, as the Wolves were dissolved by law, but Serph insists that he at least keep it for safekeeping. Lupa puts on the ring when he and Jinana decide to sacrifice themselves to fight the karmic amalgamation.
Trivia
- Gale's second Tag Ring is only ever visible in the cutscene where he puts it on. In gameplay and all future cutscenes, it is missing.
- Unused data in Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2 suggests that Argilla, Gale and Cielo's Tag Rings would have been usable as Karma Rings with no effect.
