Otsuki is a character in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Otsuki is Karukozaka High School's eccentric chemistry teacher. He is in charge of the disciplinary council and has a habit of saying that there is "no scientific basis" for things. By the time if... occurs, he is working for Ideo Hazama, whom he is said to be in love with. In his attempts to defeat the Protagonist, he continuously modifies his body with mechanical parts.

Game Appearances

Shin Megami Tensei if...

Otsuki first appears in the Lab inside Karukozaka High School, discouraging any students from leaving the school, and has ordered the disciplinary council to block off any exits. After the Protagonist and their partner obtain the ring of humility, they are stopped by a disciplinary council member who runs off to tell on them to Otsuki, and when they enter the Lab to confront him, he reveals he is working for Hazama and denies there is any scientific basis for leaving the school before attacking them. Upon defeat, Otsuki retreats.

Ostuki is encountered again inside the World of Gluttony, now with a mechanical arm. He is humiliated by his defeat at the hands of the protagonists and is confident that with his new modifications, he can beat them. He then notices them and attacks the party, though he is incredulous when they still defeat him. He drops Micro Plasm as he retreats.

Later, on both Yumi and Reiko's route, when the Protagonist tries to leave World of Envy after defeating Lilith, they are stopped by Otsuki, who has undergone more mechanical enhancements and is gleeful to have found them. Otsuki exclaims that once he presents their heads to the Deity Emperor, he will be showered with rewards, and declares there is no scientific basis for being able to defeat him now and attacks the party. Still, he is once again defeated and forced to retreat.

Right after the Protagonists defeat Chefei in the World of Greed, Otsuki appears and takes the Ring of Kindness from them, daring them to go face him in his laboratory if they want to get it back. There, Otsuki reveals himself as having remodeled his entire body with mechanics and boasts that his Plasma Power has finally surpassed its limit, attacking them after exclaiming there is no scientific basis for them to escape alive. The Protagonists are nonetheless able to defeat him, leaving Otsuki to question why he still lost as he finally dies.

On Charlie's route, Hazama instead requests that the Protagonist defeats Otsuki for him, having grown sick of him. The Protagonist travels to Otsuki's laboratory in the World of Wrath and challenges him, but he thinks they're lying about Hazama wanting him dead. Then they defeat him for a third time. Otsuki later appears in the Chamber of Seals as Hazama's final line of defence, challenging them for the fourth and final time.

Shin Megami Tensei if...: Hazama Hen

He appears in one of Hazama's flashbacks in the Nomos of Heaven. He tells Hazama demons aren't real and science is only about things that are real, while implying Hazama articulates himself oddly, and then sends him on his way.

Manga Appearances

Shin Megami Tensei if...: Gakuen no Akuma Tsukai

He is Hazama's loyal servant who reports back to him when Nobu and Yumi break the seals. He is then told to eliminate them but is eventually killed by them, with him wondering why since he had plasma power.

Trivia

• Otsuki starts off as Neutral-aligned, but as he becomes more mechanical, he becomes Law-aligned. This is likely due to Machines being associated with Law throughout the franchise.
• In the comic anthology, he has a "shrine" dedicated to Hazama. He covered his desk space's walls with Hazama posters.

Nomenclature

Otsuki's name is a compound of 大 ō meaning "great" or "large", and 月 tsuki meaning "moon".
