Futotama,[a] also known as Futodama, is a deity appearing in Japanese mythology. In the Kogo Shūi, he is recorded as the son of Takamimusubi and the ancestor of the Inbe clan.
During the events of the Iwatogakure ("Rock Cave Seclusion") as recorded in the Kojiki, Amaterasu was driven into a cave by her brother Susano-o's behavior and the land was deprived of light. To lure her out, Omoikane had Futotama and Ame-no-Koyane perform a ritual using a stag's shoulder bone and an uprooted masakaki tree on which they hung prayers, the Yata-no-Kagami, and five hundred Yasakani-no-Magatama. When Ame-no-Uzume's dancing lured out Amaterasu, Futotama sealed off the entrance to the cave with a rope, which he forbade Amaterasu from crossing. In the Nihon Shoki, one account records that it was Futotama's chanting of praises for Amaterasu which lured her out.
