Adonis is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

In Greek mythology, Adonis was a mortal lover of Aphrodite and Persephone. It was decreed by Zeus that he would spend a third of the year with Aphrodite, a third with Persephone, and a third with the goddess of his choice; Adonis chose Aphrodite for this last third. After this, he went hunting and was gored by a wild boar sent by Artemis.

He is believed to be a Greek adaptation of the Mesopotamian deity Dumuzi. His name derives from a Semitic word for "Lord".

Greek women mourned Adonis's death every year in the Adonia festival, similar to the annual mourning of Dumuzi.

Game Appearances

Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Revelation

Adonis is first encountered by Ayato Katsuragi alongside Pentagramma at the Government Office right before entering Bael's room at the top floor who challenges them to a duel, but before that he summons some demons, these being Gamigin, Psyche, Cupid and Dryad, when they're all defeated he heals Katsuragi and his friends to make their battle fair, and so a fight begins, but after he loses he escapes.

Next time that Katsuragi meets him is at Harajuku Shelter, he challenges Katsuragi to a duel but after he's defeated, ashamed, he claims he'll come back stronger.

After the events at the Odakyu HALC, Katsuragi upon leaving the building is met by a demon and tells Katsuragi that Adonis sent him a letter, the letter said that he wants to challenge him on a duel in the Underground Colosseum at Shinjuku Ground Zero, to see who’s more skilled, but that after each day that passes without him going into the fight, he'll crucify humans at the entrance of the colosseum.

Once Katsuragi reaches the Underground Colosseum, he's told that he must go alone, so his companions Rui Asuka and Tetsuya Sonoda are told to wait at a separate room, he also needs to give up his Demon Summoning Program in order to get into the fight. Once Katsuragi reached the arena Adonis welcomed him and before starting the Fighting Goddess appear and make both chose a kind of weapon they’ll use for the fight, and then the fight starts.

Once Adonis is defeated, he questions how he lost, and how it’s so shameful that it happened in front of all the audience. Then, Katsuragi gets the choice to either kill or spare Adonis, if he chooses the former he'll be stopped by Lamashtu and if he spares him, Katsuragi will turn his back on him, annoyed by this, Adonis tells Katsuragi that he will regret his choice.

Katsuragi doesn't meet Adonis for a while, but once he reaches Bael Castle, he'll meet with Adonis who says that he isn't impressed by him disabling the barrier that prevented anyone from entering the castle, and that Katsuragi is a dear friend who has humiliated him so many times, and that for this, he will give him a special lesson, that he has changed and is more powerful, that when he closes his eye he sees Katsuragi begging him for mercy and that in this moment, he will put an end to Katsuragi's life. And so, a final confrontation begins. Before dying, Adonis questions why Katsuragi won, and shortly after that he dies.

If Katsuragi loses against Baal in the top floor of Bael Castle or falls for the temptations posed by Baal, he will fall into darkness, and in that darkness he sees various demons: Tammuz, Baal Zephon and Adonis himself, and he asks Katsuragi why would he lose to something like Baal, and how he himself never won against Katsuragi a single time.
