Profile

Origin

Psyche (from the Greek for "soul")[a] is the wife of Cupid in the 2nd century AD novel Metamorphoses (better known as The Golden Ass) by Apuleius, a Roman author from Numidia. While writing in Latin and using Roman deity names, Apuleius's frame story presents the tale of Cupid and Psyche as a Greek narrative. Apuleius seems to have conceived of the story himself,[1] though it was influenced by Platonic ideas of the soul's relationship with Eros (Cupid) and Aphrodite (Venus).[2]

In Book IV of The Golden Ass, Psyche is introduced as a mortal princess thought to be the most beautiful woman on earth, and she began to receive worship. Venus, jealous, sent her son Cupid to make her fall in love with the lowest of men. Meanwhile, while her two sisters were wed to royal suitors, no suitor approached Psyche. When her father consulted the oracle at Delphi, it was said that Psyche would marry a hideous beast. Obeying the oracle, Psyche was left on a mountain alone.

In Book V, Psyche found a palace like that of a god. When night came, she consummated her marriage with her unseen husband. Some days later, Psyche's husband warned her not to answer her sisters when they come, but Psyche disobeyed; her sisters, jealous, told her that her husband was actually the prophesied beast. That night, Psyche looked to her husband with a lamp and saw that he was Cupid himself. While Psyche admired her husband, a drop of hot oil fell and burned Cupid, waking him. He promptly began to fly away, but admitted that he had previously accidentally made himself fall in love with Psyche.

In Book VI, the now-pregnant Psyche, hearing that Venus was searching for her, went to Venus. She was tortured and given impossible tasks, but she was able to complete them due to miraculous help. However, for her last task—taking a portion of Proserpina (Persephone)'s beauty—before giving it to Venus, she opened the box it was contained in; this caused her to be put into a deep sleep. Cupid, having recovered from his burn, rescued her and brought her to Jupiter, who granted Psyche ambrosia to make her immortal.

Design

Psyche is a female humanoid with blonde hair, a blue dress, and blue butterfly wings. In ancient Greek, psyche was another word for "butterfly",[3] and Psyche is as a result sometimes depicted in art with butterfly wings.
